Okay, I have to get back into writing. I've had nothing published this year, which sucks a bit, but I've been starting a new job and doing other stuff and writing kind of...fell away. I miss it.

One of the great joys of my adult life has been realizing that I can just pick up a new skill every so often, take a fun little class in it weekly for a year or two, and simply enjoy meeting people and getting medium proficient and not attempting to become professional in it at all!
For your weekend reading delectation I present my Observer piece (in print on Sunday) about my mysterious MR James-ian invitation to view the secret true crime archive of... Jeremy Beadle. observer.co.uk/culture/in-r...

Started reading Angel Down, which was a mistake. How I'm supposed to get any work done tomorrow I don't know.

My favourite thing in the run up to a holiday is to get the books I want to read on it. This year, it's: Angel Down (Daniel Kraus) The End of Everything (M. John Harrison) Solace House (Will Maclean) The Wasted Vigil and The Golden Legend (both Nadeem Aslam) Excited!

You can kill a French vampire with a baguette. It's a painstaking process but it works.
Had to drive 2.5hrs for work tomorrow so I just...decided not to? Got a train tonight, staying in a nice hotel, gonna have a little lie-in tomorrow and wake up refreshed. Feels like a treat 😂
I have just finished reading Whalefall - what a beautiful, unnerving, incredible book.
Our very own Jason Keeley has granted us all with the greatest gift; a JIMOTHY companion! This was just for a bit of fun, but now you can take Jimothy with you on your adventures in Pathfinder AND Starfinder! Scoop that little guy up! Get the fun rules: https://bit.ly/4fH7ViN
It's okay to hope that things can get better. It feels so hard at times, hope is okay if it gets you through.
Two people tried to enter a screening of The Odyssey without buying tickets after hiding inside a miniature model of the Trojan Horse. 😂😂😂
Saw Traitor (2008) in Florida, and at the terrorist plot being foiled the entire cinema was cheering, whooping, shouting "USA! USA!" As a Brit, I'd never seen anything like it and never have since!
Got me thinking.. What's the strongest reaction you've seen an audience member have to a scene in a cinema? During the birthday party scene in SIGNS I saw a whole row of young women literally throw their popcorn in the air like a cartoon.
British people have an average reading age of a nine year old.
The big literary discourse on twitter right now is whether The Hobbit—a children’s book that won children’s lit awards and was literally written for the author’s children—is appropriate reading for children or in fact such a difficult book most adults can’t “get their head around” it.
Went to London and back in a day yesterday and walked around a lot. Today I played in a samba band, in the heat. I need a weekend to recover from my weekend please 😂🫠

Today's thought: those little tubs of ice cream you get in the theatre are like enrichment for humans; took me the entire interval to get through it 😂
Lots of writers submit to woman's magazines, and lots of people read and enjoy their stories. Just another thing that AI is breaking: share.google/bKswZjB8AsTW...

The increase in significant psychological distress over the last few years shows how many people were just getting by, just holding on before. Then systemic disintegration has tipped people over the edge. What if our society enabled all of us to live decent lives, rather than 'just getting by'.
one thing that’s dying out in the next generation or so is knowing roads. my parents will ask me shit like “how’d you get there? 178? 232?” buddy i went where the computer told me.
Can’t lie, the fact that y’all were driving with PAPER maps is insane. Even worse, you had to ask random strangers for directions??
Nearly just signed off an email "nest wishes" and you know what, it was accurate - I'd like to just get into a comfy nest for a bit, please!

"Avocets live 7 years on average" is statistical error. Avocet Georg, who is 36 years old, is an outlier and should not have been counted.
WE HAVE AVOCET NEWS!!! An Avocet spotted at RSPB Middleton Lakes has been confirmed as the oldest ever recorded in the UK. At 36 years old, it's lived more than five times longer than the species' average lifespan. First ringed in 1990, it's still out there doing Avocet things. Go on Avocet. 😍
