Exceptional clarity from Science magazine but we need to take this one step further. Their design to break academic science is coupled with their design to re-segregate higher education and control culture, ideas, and memory. It fits with anti-DEI policies and Trump disclaimers at the Smithsonian.

The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

"Federal officials offered the new details about the grant cancellations as part of an agreement with plaintiffs meant to spare the government an exhaustive, evidence-uncovering process known as discovery...That process could have required federal agencies to hand over more damaging records."

NEW: In a stunning admission, the Trump administration admitted in court documents that it canceled billions in energy grants to states "based solely" on politics -- and whether that state was represented by Democrats and backed Harris in 2024. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/24/b...

Delighted to share that I’ll be sticking around at Michigan to start my lab in the Department of Human Genetics! Starting in May 2027, the Tovar lab will use functional genomics to study transcription factor biology and regulatory network dynamics in complex disease. Stay tuned for more details…

The Trump Administration’s racist science policies have achieved some of their goals. The number of Black Principal Investigators has dropped by 10% between 2024 and 2025; while the number of Hispanic PIs has fallen by 7%. For research trainees, the numbers are far worse.

The ADA prides itself on having a robust advocacy apparatus (go look at their website)! Not to mention the millions of patients in care of the physicians who attend this meeting. Beyond the message this sends to scientists, what does this signal to folks actually affected by this disease?

Well respected and brave scientists were removed from the American Diabetes Association meeting today simply for distributing copies of a published editorial critical of the administration’s policies. www.medpagetoday.com/special-repo...

A few days back I saw a flurry of news about two "foreign" virologists being charged by a DoJ attorney for an alleged "conspiracy to smuggle in monkeypox" into the use. The decided language of the DoJ press release felt off to me, so I started investigating. Full story here 🔽 Thread 🧵 1/
