Yes — you can find important sounding voices who say LLMs are conscious & we're only months away from AGI/a singularity/whatever. Just like you can find scientists who loudly reject human-induced climate change. They don't reflect the opinion of the _vast_ majority of experts in the field.

My boiling hot take on this is that, if tech companies are going to fund this kind of research (looking at Schmidt too), then the money needs to be given *no strings* to an independent arm's length research body, pooled with other funding, and treated as a donation not as direct funding.

The rare bit of good traffic safety news. Backup cameras work, and have meaningfully reduced severe injuries among kids under 5 years old caused by backovers. We can argue that cars are too big in the first place, limiting visibility, but this is good tech.
