So Monday is off to a great start with a reminder that even simple, well written instructions, can improve a user experience massively.
That Google Glass was a perfect example of human-centred prototype seems forgotten. They built it, deployed and discovered how much people (not the users alone) loathed it and they stopped it. Didn’t iterate it, didn’t try to fudge the results and blame people, just accepted it was a bad product.
Hanging out in Bristol for the evening. Way more homelessness than since my last visit. Way more.
Can highly recommend Adrian...

The rare bit of good traffic safety news. Backup cameras work, and have meaningfully reduced severe injuries among kids under 5 years old caused by backovers. We can argue that cars are too big in the first place, limiting visibility, but this is good tech.
Backup cameras have been required on new vehicles for the better part of the decade, but are they making a difference? Let's look at the stats.

If anyone would like to see a short video of a dog using their tail as a rotar blade, this is your lucky day.
So I was applying for a great role last week, and the process was easy. It was simply name, contact info and CV. It didn't ask for any extra information other than... Education. Level & year completed. Convince me that this wasn't designed to filter candidates by anything other than age.

My curated weekly newsletter is out. This week, I'm interesting in the tension between fast AI fixes and deep thinking, how we are making the web accessibility for robots, not people. Also: a happy map dataviz and an interesting system for colorblind people. 👉🏻 stephaniewalter.design/blog/pixels-...
Walk in the sunshine through Southampton this morning on my way to an appointment. Coffee, croissant, sunshine, seagulls, very continental feeling. Naturally, I spilled coffee all down my nice, fresh, clean, white t-shirt so am now sat in the waiting room looking less than presentable. Ho-hum...
Considering the length of it all, I propose we stop calling it "heatwave" and "second heatwave" here in the UK, and just call it "summer" as I feel this is going to be the new normal.
Some Friday fun: if you are tired of the word “AI” here is a chrome extension that replaces it with 💩 in the browser in all your fonts. enshittifier.wells.ee/ #AI #Entshitification
I am now convinced that no-one wants to make good experiences any more. They just want to make things quickly, no matter how shonky they end up, or even if they attempt to solve the right problem.

Trust is not built on craft alone
No amount of tooling will let product teams move faster than being trusted to own their process. That trust is earned through rigor rather than mere velocity.

#ResistanceRoots Until 1971, the prevailing psychiatric and social view framed child sexual abuse as a result of the child seducing the adult or inventing “erotic fantasies,” rather than as exploitation. A landmark 1971 presentation by social worker Florence Rush challenged this thinking. /1

The thing about social media age restrictions is that it treats today’s internet as an inevitability we all just have to deal with. The internet (and the WORLD) wasn’t like this until like four dudes were allowed to own & monetize as much tech real estate as they wanted. Fix THAT problem.
This is our 4 yearly reminder that the ITV X app is the worst streaming app in existence. Low quantity image, buffers & crashes a lot. There really isn't any excuse for how poor it is.
