Alexander Clarkson@aphclarkson.bsky.social · 6mo agoBeing alumni from UK universities and wanting their kids and kids from their wider milieu to be able to study in the UK is the one area where quite a few EU policymakers have a truly personal stake in post-Brexit arrangements. That Whitehall and Universities UK were blind to this is telling.
Temperatures have now provisionally exceeded 37°C 🌡️ Before 2026, the UK had recorded 37°C or higher on only six occasions. This year alone, we've already reached that mark three times.

Since some folk are back on covid lessons, here's what I find most interesting - that the vast majority of people and countries reacted and adapted magnificently, but that this has broadly been forgotten in our modern day grumpy online culture.
The supposed cool day this week and it still climbed to 26.8C at Heathrow over 2C warmer than average. Remarkable month the average July high in London has been 29.3C an astonishing +5.4C above 1991-2020 climo and +6.8C on 1961-1990 climate period. Staggering. (1/2)

Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.
In case you're counting, the planet is now on day 6 reaching a global surface temperature above 17.0°C. The only other years reaching 17.0°C since records began in 1940, and likely in the last 120,000 years, were 2023 and 2024. Next year will be much hotter.
