Zimbabwean folklore has the general concept of “bush” (sango in ChiShona, iganga in isiNdebele) rather than forest proper, but it was easy to locate it in Professor Ainehi Edoro’s Forest Imaginaries: How African Novels Think. It represents the ‘outside’: of village or community life; of normal or regular, ordered spaces; of day-to-day reality.

"As I had become the greatest man in my town and did no other work than to command the egg to produce food and drinks, so one day, when I commanded the egg to supply the best food and drinks in the world to these people, at the same time it did so, but when these people ate the food and drank to their satisfaction, they began to play and were wrestling with each other until the egg was mistakenly smashed, the egg with the bowl broken, the egg itself broken into two. Then I took it and gummed it. But these people still remained there, even they not playing etc. and sorry for the egg which broke, of course, when they were feeling hungry again, they asked for food etc. as usual. So I brought out the egg and commanded it as before, but it could not produce out anything again and I commanded it three times in their presence but nothing produced When these people had waited was there for four days without eating and drinking anything, then they were returning to their towns etc. one by one, but they were abusing me as they were leaving."

This glorious, and wickedly macabre, wildly funny book of fantasy, inspired by tales from the Yoruba oral traditions, is a landmark in anti-realist representation in mid-twentieth century African writing. The artistry of Amos Tutuola (1920-1997) was underestimated and undervalued at the first publication of this remarkable book (and for much of his life), but now, nearly three-quarters of a century later, this novel continues to find new readers appreciative of the skill with which Tutuola uses the fantastic as a mode for exploring questions of ethics and politics in times of accelerated social and historical change.

It is this knowledge that causes his parents' sorrow. Only now, Azaro is tired of coming and going, of being born and reborn, of never staying long enough to experience life. This time he decides to stay. This time he is resolved to make his mother smile.

THE FAMISHED ROAD sets out to explode conventional ideas of naturalistic reality as it follows Azaro's adventures through a world where reality and vision blur. Endowed with special powers that lead him periodically into mischief, pursued by his spirit friends who are reluctant to let him go, Azaro persuades us to see the world through his eyes – a teeming exuberant world crowded with heroes and villains and ordinary folk, with political shysters, debtors and creditors, landlords and tenants, fathers and sons.
