So so fucked up. We know that these people will be detained, potentially jailed for a long time (with all that entails in Myanmar), conscripted straight into the military, even if neither of those things happen... Myanmar isn't exactly safe. /sigh

This plane landed in Myanmar about three hours ago. This is the third ICE flight to Myanmar this year. Burmese deportees in 2025 were immediately sent to a torture facility next to the airport, according to Myanmar Now. Weeks later, not all of them had emerged.

I loved Everyday Movement by Gigi Leung (translated by Jennifer Feeley) and its realistic exploration of how 2019-2020 HK protest, radicalism, and politics collide with the mundane everyday lives. It was almost too painful to read at times.

Note to self, when AllTrails said the hike was hard and they meant you’ll be clinging to a rock on a knife’s ridge for the last km of the hike questioning your life choices Mount Lady MacDonald completed ✔️

Concerning development for transnational repression. “But Zang wrote that she received a phone call from Zhang the next day saying that Thai police suddenly intervened and stopped her from leaving [to resettle in Canada].”

Reading this spurred me to write a thread that got out of hand and became a post — not to downplay the imposition of Han norms, but just say this is an incomplete understanding of what "Sinicization" means in Xi's China. Beyond cultural and ethnic identity, it is about enforcing political identity.

The Secret of Sinicization

As concerns spread over China's new ethnic unity law, let's reconsider what it really means to make individuals, cultures, and institutions "Chinese" in Xi Jinping's China.

This law is a real nightmare, creates a legal grounding for the state's assimilationist colonial campaigns

Taiwan President William Lai pays tribute to the late Lam Wing-kee (林榮基), 70, Causeway Books co-founder who fled HK after an arduous era of being "disappeared by the CCP" and ended up in Taiwan in 2019. Unfortunately, Chinese harassment followed him to Taipei. He sold banned books for a living. RIP

In very Canadian fashion, Canada quietly released a Defence Digital Strategy on Tuesday. This is a surprise because the strategy has many positive signals supporting digital sovereignty, digital/cyber procurement reform, and buying more from Canadian industry. www.cyberincontext.ca/p/canada-has...

At this year’s races, a Canadian team was banned from wearing their team jersey because it was suspected of violating the Regional Flag and Emblem Ordinance, enacted by the “patriots-only” legislature in 2023 — the same law now invoked to bar local clubs from using the HKSAR flag or bauhinia flower.

At today’s int’l dragon boat races, I thought it was interesting how HK/Macau teams had to be prefaced 中國香港/澳門 while teams from the mainland were simply named for their locality. At the same time, mainland teams’ tops all had the PRC flag while local clubs were instructed not to wear the HKSAR flag.

You may disagree with the action, but the symbolism is important. Finally, people who had never had a true voice - or at least, a voice that's equal to business interests which have seats in the chamber - were able to say what they want, in a space they've reclaimed. Source: Telegram (Jul 2019)
