Climate scientist at the Finnish Meteorological Institute using Earth System Models to study e.g. negative emission technologies, carbon budgets, and aerosol climate effects.

Yesterday, Edition 3 of the State of Carbon Dioxide Removal Report was released. 🚨✅ Chapter 10, led by Sabine Fuss and Abby Lunstrum, provides update of estimated mitigation potentials and costs for various #CDR methods. 🔍🔦 (Brief overview below)

This is great work. The carbon math is that we have to get emissions to net zero quickly & we need CDR AS WELL, and we need nature based solutions. Let’s do those. But folks have used the possibility of nature based solutions as cheat code to delay doing the harder stuff. The thing is, it is not.

In our latest paper with @manonberger.bsky.social, Lester Kwiatkowski, and @bopplaurent.bsky.social, we show that if we properly account for iron limitation and nutrient competition with phytoplankton, growing seaweed isn't really an effective technique for removing atmospheric CO₂. 🌊🧪

Hi everyone, in the course of NorESM development for CMIP7 - we've had need to do some rapid benchmarking and diagnostics. To this end, I've made a couple of tools which might be useful for the wider community - python ports of ncview and CMAT. /thread/

One frequently sees headlines that X is warming faster than the global average. That's true of nearly everywhere that humans live, but only because humans nearly all live on land. The process of global warming will generally warm land faster than the oceans.

How hot is too hot for humans? Not 35C wet-bulb, as long assumed A new study finds: Survival limits vary with age & exposure Sun + dry heat can be just as dangerous as humidity Heatwaves already crossing critical thresholds We’re closer to the edge than we thought www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Deadly heat stress conditions are already occurring - Nature Communications

The authors use a physiological approach, finding recent extreme heat events had deadly heat stress conditions, particularly for fully exposed older people. Conditions were well below wet-bulb tempera...

“Europe's landscapes over the past more than 20 million years have predominantly been a mosaic: a mixture of grasslands, scrub and woodlands of varying density. A light-filled, flower-rich open woodland shaped by grazing animals as a decisive ecological force—not a dark closed-canopy forest.”
