Yesterday afternoon 14:09 in Lacanau Océan in France. A pale red sun through the smoke tinged everything in Mars style orange. Welcome in the climate emergency! Despite all denial of the fossil fuel lobby, it’s scientific fact: CO2 emissions heat up Earth & make fires worse. 🔥🔥🔥

When the story of why humanity didn't stop climate change is written, it will feature front pages like this. Even as the skies blacken with climate change-induced wildfires, right wing media continue their relentless crusade against measures to tackle it.
More than 60 years ago, the fossil fuel industry sponsored climate research. Industry leaders were amongst the first to realize the effects their products have on our planet's climate. And they decided to act. To act and save their business model, unfortunately.
When did States know enough to act on climate change? That question is no longer just historical. It's increasingly a legal one. Our 🆕 report provides evidence that many governments knew about fossil fuel-driven climate change far before they admitted: www.ciel.org/reports/what... 🧵

Professor @joerirogelj.bsky.social and Dr @robinlamboll.bsky.social have contributed to the latest Indicators of Global Climate Change (IGCC) assessment, showing human-induced warming reached 1.37°C in 2025. At current emissions trends, 1.5°C could be exceeded within around four years.

With all the July model runs now in, it is very likely that 2026 will see the largest El Niño event since records began in the late 1800s – and potentially by a truly mind-blowing margin. The median estimate is now 3.6C, roughly 0.8C hotter than the prior record (2.75C). www.theclimatebrink....
1/ Predictions of future climate improve over time, but this shouldn't weaken the Paris Agreement. But in several widespread interpretations of "well below 2C", it does. New (short!) paper with @joerirogelj proposes a fix. www.nature.com/articles/s41... 🧵
Future-proofing interpretations of the Paris Agreement’s limit of well below 2 °C - Nature Climate Change
Here the authors show that a common interpretation of the Paris Agreement’s ‘well below 2° C’ target is changing with time, which could lead to higher overall warming. They propose that using median t...

🌍 Cutting carbon emissions isn’t enough – we also need carbon removal. But planting trees or energy crops at scale can clash with biodiversity. Careful planning is key, says Professor @joerirogelj.bsky.social and colleagues. 🌱 #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #CarbonRemoval #Sustainability
Planting trees to remove carbon can harm the environment – or protect it: study highlights trade-offs
Carbon removal strategies may conflict with biodiversity conservation, but careful choices could bring benefits.

Can land-intensive climate mitigation help protect biodiversity - or create new trade-offs? A new study by our researchers @rubenpruetz.bsky.social & S. Fuss shows 1.5°C pathways could halve the the combined loss of climate refugia compared with current policies iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

In @theconversation.com @rubenpruetz.bsky.social, @joerirogelj.bsky.social, Sabine Fuss and Gaurav Ganti write that carbon removal strategies may conflict with biodiversity conservation in many instances: for example, planting trees and energy crops in pristine ecosystems such as savannas.

My first paper had to be mailed to Stockholm, Sweden, and then mailed to reviewers around the world. Everything by mail! It was submitted, reviewed, revised, typeset, and published in 3 months. I feel bad for early-career scientists who can't find a single reviewer after 5 months. It's gotta change.
