[ɐlʲɪkˈsʲej] (or [əˈlɛkseɪ] if you want) [bɐˈtʲiɕəf] a man of many names linguist, grad student, ESL instructor, artist, poet, immigrant, feminist, anti-racist, queer, bi, trans, episcopalian (he/they) probably rambling about linguistics and life

It's gotten so much easier to start learning so many more languages, you used to be limited to the 3-5 major languages that a local bookstore or educational institution had decided it was worth making available, and now you can just like, look things up in hundreds of them

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

last year i read a paper where the author claimed that east slavic speakers of English as L2 use perfect tenses too much because English lacks the perfective aspect built into the verb itself. i was in that moment very seen, uncomfortably seen, and i can’t stop noticing that about myself.

popularization of the term “emotional labor” via therapyspeak in today’s culture has done such great damage. emotional labor is specifically managing one’s emotions to meet job’s requirements. it’s not emotional labor to be human and extend empathy. it’s actually good to partake in community care.

James Talarico on Texas officially banning THC: “Texans aren’t going to stop smoking weed and eating edibles because politicians in Austin say so. We are now telling full-grown adults how to live their lives. This is the nanny state at its worst; this is big government at its worst."

ok. I’ll bite if anyone wanna share their thoughts. substack vs medium? my Substack is exclusively for poetry kinda / more artistic writing. i feel like medium by itself has a more nonfictiony (not that poetry *isn’t* nonfiction but) feel which may be more suited for blogs? since i wanna write more🫪

as someone who was a victim of a property crime last week (!), i am still an abolitionist!! and also against punitive justice!! i’ve been a victim of several crimes including theft, car damage from gun fire, death threats — the police did not prevent those crimes! nor did they solve anything

It’s so funny when people are like “sure you’re an abolitionist now but wait until you’re the victim of a property crime.” Buddy, the most useful thing the police have ever done for property crime is put the form you need to submit to your insurance online.

regardless of how using AI impacted Hank Green’s research, I vividly remember lots of criticism of the SciShow video about HRT: several incorrect claims + they didn’t consult enough trans people, specifically consulted no trans women. all this to say, you must always be skeptical of pop science! :3
