Hey fellow folks who work in libraries: does your library charge admission for special collections open house type events where there is no lecture component?

📕 VERY VANCOUVER is out! It's an odyssey through backyard gardens, alley bottle hoards, eateries like Duffin's and east-side family life beyond our pretty skylines and granola reputation. I hope you enjoy these 15 stories and hanging out with the ~70 larger-than-life figures who lent their voices.
“MC noticed the blood, first. The sodden carpet squelched against her soles as she wheeled the book cart past the cases. She looked down. Paint, or dark water? Her gaze followed the puddle to the narrow space between two of the cases, too narrow for a person to step between. And she saw the body.”
i don't like to police genre, but it's not dark academia unless somebody gets squished in one of these bad boys
"Today is August 4, 2026." Can't find my copy of The Martian Chronicles to take a photo of the actual published story, but it remains a collection well worth reading 76 years later: bookshop.org/a/862/9781668094853 #books #writing
happy there will come soft rains day to all those who partake
The last library job search I was on had over 200 applicants. We had to narrow those to 10-15 for 1st round interviews. If you’re really excited about a position PLEASE use your cover letter to tell the committee why you’re right for the role. They need help seeing this is the perfect fit for you!
I know I’m officially old because I finally see the value of cover letters. Related: #mlis grads, I am literally begging you to read the job posting before applying. I want so badly to give y’all a chance. But you have to prove you know what job you’re applying for (🧵)
everyone who likes this post should by my book SUBLIMATION by Isabel j Kim. It’s not related at all but it’s higher quality than my post is.
As an archivist who regularly works with the "stuff of history" meaning documents that show me over and over the character of people celebrated based primarily on the positions of authority they've been in: yes, join us.
To be a historian is to speak ill of the dead and the rest of you should take more history classes and join us.
It’s the Ben Franklin Bridge’s 100th birthday!!! Absolutely fantastic piece, in design and reporting, in @inquirer.com on the building of the bridge incorporating really cool construction photographs from Lehigh and LCP collections. Walk across it tomorrow with me :) share.inquirer.com/EB7jKe
Spanning 100 Years: How Philadelphia’s monumental bridge was built
A century after opening, this is how the Benjamin Franklin Bridge was built to last.

Okay. I am not encouraging you to see this film. But I AM saying if you did, you would encounter a Richard E. Grant so unbearably perfect it made me and a close friend laugh so hard we couldn't speak for ten minutes. deadline.com/2026/07/mel-...

This week, in Talk of the Town, I went to Hex&Co to speak with @isabel.kim about her debut novel, "Sublimation," evil caves, and indie board games that are more fun to read than play:
Isabel J. Kim Makes Her Own World
At a board-game café on the Upper West Side, the lawyer and author discusses her new book, “Sublimation,” about borders, parallel selves, and an eerily Trump-like government.

“If you make the least damn bit of noise,” replied Samuel, “I will send you to hell.”
This is why it's so important to me not to blame people who got something out of these books! It's odious to use your professional credentials to spread misinformation. It's not odious to believe what a trusted expert tells you about their field.
Ok, I have now listened to this and it's great, and also I don't feel too bad about liking this book when I read it, because the author just deliberately lied and misrepresented and fabricated in ways that it wouldn't have occurred to me to question at the time!
Much appreciation to the people that have been subscribing and helping us spread the word. Improving staff pay isn't something that's typically a big motivator, so it means a lot to see so many people getting behind the goal.
Between now and October (our 20th anniversary issue), we're running a subscription drive and dedicating all new revenue toward improving pay for our staff, writers, artists, and contractors. Details on how to subscribe can be found here: clarkesworldmagazine.com/subscribe/
An ice cream truck has been parked somewhere near my apartment playing a 15 second midi loop of Little Brown Jug over and over again for the last hour and I think I understand NIMBYs now.
