It's really depressing to see all the hateful comments and policies from Republicans targeting international students after having been one myself, but it does confirm why I moved back to Canada and why I don't plan on applying to any journalism fellowships in the US in the near future.

Anyone can become disabled at any time. It’s not a moral failing. It’s not laziness or a lack of effort. It’s a part of the human condition. People get sick. Bodies break down. It’s a minority group you can join any time.

Once again I must complain about the fact that the state of California has decided that I don't deserve a real birth certificate or to know who gave birth to me. I'm 52 years old and I have a fake birth certificate that lists my mom and dad (the people who adopted me) and not my birth parents.

This girl I used to waitress with in Austin, we moved to New York together in 2003 on a literal Greyhound bus. Shared a fifth floor walk-up studio that, when it rained, had more leaks in the ceiling than we had pots and pans. We used to get drunk and smoke off the fire escape and do “sad-offs.”
