Really fun and accessible workshop on sketchnoting today by @felibe444.bsky.social at the start of #iOSDevUK Great way to open a conference by helping people take entertaining notes to look back at.

Today's BBC article about the merger of Greenwich and Kent universities cheerily says "students will be able to use libraries and access wellbeing services across the campuses in Greenwich, Medway and Canterbury" and also notes that the campuses are 54 miles apart www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Greenwich and Kent 'super-university' created amid funding squeeze
The London and South East University Group (LASE) will be the third largest higher education institution in the UK.

We confirmed previous research that sex chromosomes have evolved repeatedly in geckos. However, our genome-scale data let us move beyond just XY vs ZW. We observed different chromosomes in the genome acting as sex chromosomes in different species.

As part of my PhD project at Aberystwyth University, I'm investigating the interactions between European starlings and livestock farmers across Wales. I have launched a survey to help understand farmers experiences with starlings. Survey: app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/aber/engli...
Never seen so many people on the promenade in Aberystwyth before. All watching the eclipse on a wonderfully warm evening. I’m very lucky to live and work here.
You will notice that the image has some unusual artefacts. This is because it takes separate picture for each filter with a couple of seconds' gap in between, and it's hard to keep still! We only did 3 filters here - the camera has 11. 🧵4/4
Part 2 … after we reset the telescope after we knocked the tripod. This covers the longer part with the maximum coverage. An excellent evening. Interesting colour change during the maximum period - we had about 90% eclipse. loving the photos from those who were in totality…
Not got glasses for the eclipse? Our fabulous Outreach Officer, Tally, has this great set of instructions for you how you can build a viewer to watch the eclipse. If you are in Aberystwyth, come to bandstand from 5:30pm where our Physics dept has session to watch eclipse.

Trying to get my head around this a bit more doi.org/10.59350/spc... Now I have the full picture — you're right to push back, and that's on me 🤦. The load-bearing tapestry of language is the smoking gun I should have been aware of 🧠.
Codon usage bias for prose
Anthropic is now watermarking Claude's output. The mechanism is statistical (not lexical) and a detection hit doesn't mean what most people will assume.

Significant update to the AllTheBacteria paper, including discovering new antimicrobial peptides and testing in vitro and vivo. This has grown into a fantastic collaboration!

The anatomy of an AI-supported academic article is becoming more apparent. I desk reviewed ~70 manuscripts this week for our journal. Reckon 20ish had significant AI assistance. On top of hundreds of others recently I'm starting to see patterns. Are other editors are seeing the same or similar? 1/

They're a lovely bunch, the students of Aberystwyth Computer Science. They will be doing amazing things in a couple of years time. This is what uni offers: to be part of a group like this, learning and growing. Among all the gloom about UK uni finances+futures, this experience is what matters.
Our computer science finallists in 2026, along with our staff and research students. We wish you all the best in your future careers as you leave Aberystwyth and head off into the rest of the world. We hope you stay connected with us and with all the friends you have made at @aberuni.bsky.social
"Genome sequence data underwent quality control using FastQC [13]" means "We ran FastQC on all our data, but we didn't really look at, or understand the reports, and we certainly didn't remove any samples from our study." #bioinformatiocsr #humour #reality
so if AI is so amazing, why don’t articles and books written with it have huge “proudly made with AI” banners and stickers on it we all know why
