One of those "I bet there's a story behind this" moments: local lavender farm expressly prohibits boudoir or nude photo shoots.

There was, however, one exception to this: Minneapolis-St Paul. There, a finance bro, the mob, and a crooked lawyer really did buy the trains and sell them for scrap - but that was the exception, not the rule. 12/12

Running about 5 hours late on the westbound Amtrak Empire Builder. The dining car can’t make hot food and there’s no observation car. However, any irritation I have melts away since I’m traveling with a 10 year old who is having the absolute time of his life just BEING on a long-haul train.
Holy shit holy shit holy shit This is huge!! They did it!!! They fucking did it!
Endometriosis takes nine years to diagnose. That’s about to change. NICE has approved two tests: a saliva test reading microRNA markers, and a gut-sensor test returning results in 45 minutes, sparing women the keyhole surgery currently needed. buff.ly/QX3jHk8 #ShareGoodNewsToo

Having a change of scenery in my remote work job is a massive mental and emotional boost. Heartbreaking & infuriating that all but two UMN libraries are closed to the public, and Wilson's appointment request form is only on the "public access" page linked to in the banner.
I’ve been needing to visit the library at UMN, but apparently the public is not allowed inside other than appointments? This is not how things used to work. Does anyone know if this is adhering to policy and/or statute?

Today in ridiculous slop: I wasn't sure how to pronounce "Havre," a town in Montana. Found for "how to say" videos that... each said Havre differently with computer-generated voices. Finally got the answer from an old local newspaper article.

Based on the past few days, I’m planning for the Amtrak trip to have a delay between two hours and five hours.
Long-haul @amtrak.com trip coming up so I've of course started doing the very normal thing of looking at causes of delays along the route and tracking current trains. AND BECAUSE I KNOW YOU'RE CURIOUS: most delays due to reduced speed (wind/fire risk) & freight priority (which causes MORE delays)
@startribune.com if you haven’t already, you should be running this story on the front page. There is a direct link between DOGE cuts and the BWCA fires. Every Minnesotan needs to understand this. www.adn.com/nation-world...
‘We were shovel-ready’: A Minnesota forest hit by DOGE cuts is now ablaze
Officials said losing out on the ability to do vital prevention work at a perilous time for the region hindered them from being as prepared as they could have been.

Folks need to understand this. Defend trans lives.
Anti-trans ballot measures aren't just a tool to pass bad policy; they're about testing the willingness of voters to buy into a bigger and more dangerous agenda and a cynical dodge from the bad polling this administration and its friends are facing. Let's draw the line here and now.
Travel tip: the "Bring This Basket" 🧺 A few weeks before a trip, I set a laundry basket out. Any flash of "I need to remember to bring this!" or "Oooh this would be fun/nice to bring" - it goes in the basket. When I pack, the necessities are right there, and I can decide on any "nice to have"s.

To me cutting USAID is like, you put a quarter into a slot every day to keep millions of people alive. You don’t have to do it but it causes you no hardship. Then one day the job falls to people who are overtly white supremacist and they decide to stop doing it. It is most obviously murder

zomg a Mamdani-hosted World’s Fair would be both an incredible boost AND ALSO another chance to dunk on Robert Moses.
The amount of joy the World Cup brought Americans seems like a great argument for reviving the World’s Fair. Technically it’s still going, but it’s a shadow of itself. The next one is going to be in Belgrade & the one after that is in Riyadh. We should kick off a new series starting in New York.

Hi, vernacular architectural historian here! So what’s happened here is basically yeah that’s a gate to hell
Found this gate in York. It had a standard lock, plus a padlock and a chain holding it shut. It was very very securely closed. The only thing on the other side is a blank wall. The only conclusion I can make is that this is a magic portal to hell.
I don't know that I can read this whole thing yet, but they severely misjudged Minnesotans in the idea that use of force would make Minnesotans less likely to be in the streets/helping people. This mode of operating got average, comfortable Minnesotans involved.
"You’ve got 3,000 law enforcement agents that are fixin’ to lock this city down,” We’re going to pacify this place, we’re going to roll ‘em up." "They’re going to kill someone else,” a prosecutor on the call said later. Others agreed." removepaywalls.com/5/https://ww...
