Yesterday GCTU hosted the UKCRC "How to be a great CI" workshop and it was a fantastic day. The day offered wonderful insights from speakers and a great opportunity to network and create relationships to support future clinical research #ClinicalTrials @uofgmvls.bsky.social @uofgshw.bsky.social
Fern Harvey’s fab poster presentation of her systematic review on process evaluations for complex intervention trials. Better reporting of context, mechanisms of action and fidelity would enable greater learning about successful interventions #ImpSci #EIE2025 @au-primarycareuol.bsky.social
A cluster randomised crossover design incorporates the principles of both cluster trials (where groups of individuals eg wards, schools etc are randomly assigned) and crossover trials where, in this case, the clusters cross over to different treatment/s for set time periods 2/7
At #CCR25, we saw some trials use a #CompositeOutcome (an endpoint that combines more than one outcome into a single measure) & also saw some of the problems these can throw up. I have discussed these before but thought it would be useful to revisit 1/9 #MethodologyMonday #120
🚀 Exciting News! 🚀 Interested in or leading a clinical trial? Want to be the best Chief Investigator you can be? This updated course is for you! tinyurl.com/HTBAGCI #ClinicalTrials #CITraining @leedsctru.bsky.social @amandafarrin.bsky.social
Phew: ResearchFish submitted again for another year ✅️
A common issue in trials is how to accommodate multiple important outcomes. Approaches include composite outcomes or using the win ratio method (I have posted on these before). A newer method is the #DOOR (Desirability of Outcome Ranking) approach 1/7 #MethodologyMonday #113
📢 Delighted our CHART trial is now OPEN to recruitment Massive effort from our @complexleedsctru.bsky.social trial team, @drandyclegg.bsky.social @vickigphysio.bsky.social & many others to get this complex study ready to go 🎉 🙏 @nihr.bsky.social for funding

Interesting historical principles of clinical trial conduct … Rule 5 “the medical statistician has to be competent” … sure hope we’ve got that one sorted!
#OTD 28 Jan 1809 Louis-Dominique-Jules Gavarret b (d 30 Aug 1890) An early proponent of the 'statistical method' in medicine, his 1840 book 'Principes de Statistique Médicale' was among the first to describe statistical principles for rigorous clinical trial conduct. /10 🧵
An issue that often comes up is how to set a “non-inferiority margin” in a non-inferiority trial and how to ensure it is appropriate 1/8 #MethodologyMonday #109

We've frustratingly allowed "real world" to become a deceptive synonym for "observations we happened haphazardly to make". I'd say half the studies that come to me now, the majority of which are useful but modest clinical audits, will have "real world" in the proposal title. It's magic!
I am not that surprised that more women quit academic publishing than men- this chimes with data showing fewer women get their papers published, grants funded if they lead them and that more women get pushed into support roles. We do need to do more to support and mentor female staff. 🧪
Who’s quitting academia? Data reveal gender gaps in surprising fields
Even in scientific areas in which women are well represented, they are up to 40% more likely than men to leave research within 20 years.
