BREAKING: @delauro.house.gov announces at a House Oversight hearing with NIH director Jay Bhattacharya that OMB approved the agency's apportionment last night. That means the agency should have access to its appropriated funds — 42 days after its spending bill passed.

Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isn’t flowing to researchers. The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. 🧵👇

"Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a nearly blind refugee from Burma who Border Patrol agents dropped off at a doughnut shop Thursday and left to find his way home, 5 miles away, has been found dead." To read the words is to damn all involved, from Trump on down.

What's more shocking than ICE's plan to cram as many 8,500 humans into massive, soul-crushing warehouses? Seeing the actual DHS floor plan that echoes slavery ships and history's worst gulags with no rec space but a gun range for guards My new column on the camps www.inquirer.com/opinion/ice-...

The hidden ICE blueprint that should horrify every American | Will Bunch

An internal Department of Homeland Security document shows how ICE plans to cram thousands of detained human beings inside a Georgia warehouse.

We have an unprecedented moment of solidarity between leftists, liberal, centrists, and even non-MAGA Republicans on opposing DHS and after like 3 days Dems completely folded their hand and are prepared to give ICE $10 billion more if they pinky promise to behave themselves

Chuck Schumer just announced demands on DHS to avoid shutdown: 1. End roving patrols, tighten rules on warrants 2. Enforce accountability & unified code of conduct for agents 3. No more masks & require bodycams There are *already* standards on much of this. The issue is DHS isn't following them!

This year's Neural Mechanisms of Acoustic Communication (NMAC) GRC is looking great! Fantastic lineup already. More talks will be selected based on abstracts. Please apply. 👇 #bioacoustics #neuroskyence

Americans & Europeans needlessly exposing African babies to preventable diseases just to see if they can find something that would justify their preexisting antivaccine beliefs is not only unscientific and actually anti-science, it is very much reminiscent of colonialist, racist human rights abuses

Ryan Marino, MD@ryanmarino.bsky.social · 8mo ago

“It is not clear what the research question is. It seems to be about the safety of the vaccine rather than its effectiveness, but both are already well-established, and to undertake such a study in a population where almost 1/5 of the adult population has a marker of infection seems extremely risky”

Taken together, it appears that as RFK Jr. cuts funding and aid to vulnerable countries, he is more than willing to exploit infants in a situation where we already know the HepB birth dose is safe and effective. This is disgraceful, and it most certainly will not improve trust in public health.

The FDA said four major retailers continued to sell baby formula linked to a nationwide outbreak of bacterial illness in infants even after the products were recalled.

Academics who have advised a graduate student from China over the past years would be banned from federal funding. This would give the federal government one more lever to attack scientists. And how long before they expand the list of "hostile foreign" countries?

The Securing American Funding and Expertise from Adversarial Research Exploitation (SAFE) Act would deny federal funding to any U.S. scientist who collaborates with anyone “affiliated with a hostile foreign entity,” a category that includes four countries: China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.

This has gotten surprisingly little attention — it's not even on the front page of @science.org right now — but it's really hard to describe what the SAFE Research Act would do to US science and scientists without sounding insane www.science.org/content/arti...

PSA for people with NIH grant periods starting January 1st (including most NIGMS MIRAs): your RPPR is due Saturday, but they haven’t sent out the usual automated reminders, presumably due to the shutdown

Senators on the brink of retirement who lived full, wealthy lives and never feared the loss of their own healthcare voting for their constituents to die from their inability to afford the same is treasonous
