I've been working in the gaming industry for at least 15 years. Previously @2xko.riotgames.com @avatarfighters.bsky.social, Diesel Legacy

The main difference between the American Games Industry and the Japanese Games Industry is that the Japanese Game Industry has some sense of continuity, whether that is in the form of individuals, teams, or institutional knowledge, Whereas the American Game Industry eats itself alive every few years

Modus operandi of AAA development team is to be so large, with so many people acting as “stakeholders,” that responsibility for bad ideas is completely diluted. No one ends up being “held accountable”, and that’s why we’re seeing these latest games turn out the way they do

points at sign: THE GAMES INDUSTRY’S CUSTOMER IS THE STOCK MARKET, NOT THE GAMER Live service games are seen as ‘worth the risk’ because when one blows up (Roblox, Fortnite, GTA Online) it makes so much money that it covers all previous failures and more. What gamers say is irrelevant to this.

@alanahpearce.bsky.social As someone who knows more about the gaming industry, do the higher ups just don’t listen anymore or do they just have selective hearing? Do we need to throw physical money at them and tell them “we want just a single player game, no multiplayer.”

I've seen some companies offer "new manager" training, and others get it from mentors, but companies in generally are bad at teaching people how to lead. A lot of terrible executives get far on charisma and connections, but being an effective leader requires much more than just raw intuition.

I’ve been learning so much about leadership lately and some things I’ve come to value are: -stability under pressure -decision quality -ability to pick the right battles -knowledge of the territory/discipline -understanding of what stakeholders value as opposed to what you personally value

Looking at some recent takes from the USian FGC, I think they’re in for a rude awakening soon when they realize that their opinions and cultural takes aren’t universally shared by the rest of the world, huh?
