Hi, I'm looking to speak to people who have left games journalism in the last few years and have gone onto do something else. DMs are open, or luke@aftermath.site, thanks!

After we stopped recording this episode Mike and I both basically went 'well that's the most useful episode of this show we've ever recorded' hahaha.

On this week's episode, @alanahpearce.bsky.social & @mikebithell.bsky.social sat down with @emaudible.bsky.social to talk about the sound/foley design in @househouse.com's truly excellent BIG WALK. Turns out: dog toys, big rocks, and giant cider bottles. youtu.be/Tp1Dt04c34E?...

I've been watching a lot of Alanah's game dev "behing the curtains" videos as of late and they are all very insightful and on point. VERY welcomed in this current industry landscape. And yeah, you have a hard time switching off the "dev" brain when playing. Which makes it a hard hobby to have.

For my newest video I took people's assumptions about game development and... addressed them! Including why crunch actually happens, how much money game developers make, and the unique way that making games 'ruins them' for you: youtu.be/WnfKzdTUjtw?...

I just recalled one more thing regarding this (again, excellent) video: the "making it ruins the game for you" part is true in that every story reveal is spoiled the moment you go into preprod, but it's also really hard to turn off your developer sight for a game you only saw as data for so long. 🧵

As much as I’d love this to be true, it’s fundamentally not how the stock market works. The stock market does not “react to customer retention” - it is very specifically focused on projected YoY growth. Existing customers are useless unless they can be converted into growth.

points at sign: THE GAMES INDUSTRY’S CUSTOMER IS THE STOCK MARKET, NOT THE GAMER Live service games are seen as ‘worth the risk’ because when one blows up (Roblox, Fortnite, GTA Online) it makes so much money that it covers all previous failures and more. What gamers say is irrelevant to this.

@alanahpearce.bsky.social As someone who knows more about the gaming industry, do the higher ups just don’t listen anymore or do they just have selective hearing? Do we need to throw physical money at them and tell them “we want just a single player game, no multiplayer.”
