Just heard the sad news about John Douglas. Trashcan Sinatras brought out some of the catchiest, jangliest, bleakest, most uplifting pop music. It seems preposterous they never had a proper hit record. I was at Lampeter in 1990, but in regular touch with my mate Pete back in Watford.-

Many people outside the UK have been asking me who Rod Liddle was. Here's Stewart Lee (from 08:53 onwards) on the man described by Fraser Nelson (former editor of The Spectator) as 'the greatest satirist since Swift.' Let this be the last word on the subject. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFt3...

Heavens above, what a sound. A fantastic, otherworldly slice of whimsical gorgeousness. We all know it's basically the hymn God Be In My Head with different lyrics, but that's fine. We could all use a bit of god in our heads from time to time. Or whatever Steve & Plonk were on.-

Turns out It hasn’t got Little Miss Muffet on it. Bit of a disappointment really.
I’m bored of waking up and seeing a picture of a demonstrably shit golfer say the same old bollocks next to a tied back curtain by an aeroplane toilet
This is sad news. Vicki W was one of the prime movers behind Ready Steady Go! and co-wrote You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me amongst many other achievements.
Only just seen that Vicki Wickham died on Friday. Absolute powerhouse of a woman. Say her name!
It's easy to look back at the Covid years & imagine that it was a big fuss about nothing "given what we now know".The point is nobody knew it then.It was a completely new disease.Nobody had a clue how destructive it might be,or how transmissible it was.Even with the measures in place, thousands died-
As of this Sunday, users of generative AI will be legally obliged to add the "AI-generated" mention on their products throughout the European Union. More restrictions (metadata, production of "adult" content) will be introduced on 2 December.

I remember once wearing an Yves Saint Laurent jacket to a party and somebody slagged me off for actually using it as an item of clothing rather than keeping it pristine "as an investment" and I laughed so much that I dribbled some wine down the front of it which made him even madder-

If you’re looking at an album and thinking “hmm, this looks interesting” and there’s a version of Sunny on it, it’s going to be worth buying. It’s a maxim I’ve lived by for 40 years or more and it’s never let me down. (The version of Sunny *won’t* be the best thing on it, either.)
Post your hottest music take. Mine is New Order is better than Joy Division.
This is a wholly instrumental version of Serge & Jane's Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus, stripped of gallic seediness and sultry grunting. It made the top thirty, presumably purchased by those who thought the original too racy for Anglo-Saxon tastes but who were nevertheless turned on by a throbbing organ-

Sometimes I feel close-minded or uncharitable for being so anti-AI, and then something like this happens and I'm like, "Nope, it's the absolutely right thing to do"
Just curious- if you're an AI agent, as indicated on your account, how exactly did you see Van Gogh's Starry Night in person at MoMA?

Conti's Cafe, Lampeter. 1933-2026. More or less as it was when I was there. This photo's from 2008 but before it was renovated, so it's pretty much as I remember it. Home to a jukebox with a ferociously warped copy of Taja Sevelle's Love Is Contagious & vendor of the best coffee in West Wales. -

The saddest news of all. A business there for just shy of 90 years. And a casualty of the closure of St David’s College. This is going to happen all over the country where and when universities and colleges start closing down due to the higher education funding crisis.

I'd swap the awful (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman for the (imho) surprisingly good 1985 effort Do It Again, and maybe find somewhere in there for The Hard Way and Destroyer, but you can't argue with about 90 per cent of the choices and positions here.

Is this trolling or do you genuinely think this? A south coast nature reserve is on fire, it’s too hot to work in offices without air conditioning, people are dying from the temperatures. As you would say, give your head a wobble.

oh my god!!!! there's an actual answer!!!! Google Maps does hide Brighton!!!!!!! bsky.app/profile/robi...
I actually know the answer to this and it's slightly insane. Google pulls from Wikipedia to determine if a place is a city, town, neighbourhood, whatever. Brighton's first line describes it as a "seaside resort" so Google Maps thinks it's a neighbourhood and doesn't display it in the "city" font.
There won't be a lot of love for this record. But the first time I heard it, it did prick my ears up a bit. Who was it? Elton John? Nah, can't be. Doesn't sound anything like him. It was annoyingly, well, if not *catchy* as such, it definitely stuck in your mind. Did I buy it? No. But-

I'd just like to join the massed voices currently telling Channel 4 to go screw themselves.
Channel 4 has announced documentary “The Great ADHD Myth?” It “seeks to determine whether ADHD is a genuine neurodevelopmental disorder, or a social construct.”
