You’d think that with increasing numbers of shows and manga, demand for dubs on multiple streaming services, and fans looking for better quality translation and loc, translators would be living well. Nope. The workload has increased, the deadlines have been shortened, and quality checks are gone.

LRT: there’s a reason everyone who works in Japanese media localization is rallying around Jan’s statement here. Anime, manga, and games are seemingly bigger than ever and none of the creatives involved in getting that media into English are making any money.

The stalking and harassment that so many in this industry face is another massive issue. On top of the terrible pay, there are people with a vested interest in trying to destroy people’s livelihoods, and hardly anyone with any power seems interested in standing up for them.

Reposting this from Molly Lee, whose harassment over Slow Damage makes me upset years later. I will die on the hill of that translation. We were lucky that we *didn't* have the roadblocks stopping us from interacting with the original authors that this article talks about, and it *still* happened.

For context (since the Post doesn’t provide any) this is around the same 6-month casualty rate as the war in Afghanistan 2006-2009 or so. Afghanistan had higher deaths to injuries, but the numbers are not very far off.
