I do think “every rich person went insane during covid because it was the first time they’ve been inconvenienced in decades” felt a little reductive at first but damn if isn’t more and more compelling as the years drag on

A friend talked about a mobile game he was playing that had weird translation issues. That got me to thinking about what the cause of those issues could be, and considering the wider question of how many factors can influence a translation before even considering an individual translator's merits. 🧵

I’m a couple chapters into 1000xResist and that game is NOT afraid to stab you right in the heart emotionally. That being said, this line read in particular cracked me up.
Some people might not be aware, but it is entirely possible that without Dolly Parton we wouldn’t have had a COVID vaccine. She partly funded Moderna’s research and gave the largest individual contribution to make it all happen. Just gives you an idea of the kind of person she was.

The stalking and harassment that so many in this industry face is another massive issue. On top of the terrible pay, there are people with a vested interest in trying to destroy people’s livelihoods, and hardly anyone with any power seems interested in standing up for them.

We were lucky that we *didn't* have the roadblocks stopping us from interacting with the original authors that this article talks about, and it *still* happened.
I say this infrequently online, but my rates have actually gone down by 20% since pandemic. I haven't been getting any work lately at all so it's been really rough for me. I got evicted, ended up in hotels and now my mom's basement. My colleagues are always kind, the industry is not.

Anime, manga, and games are seemingly bigger than ever and none of the creatives involved in getting that media into English are making any money.
I have been working my freelancer arse off for a games client for over 11 years, basically full-time. I never once asked for my rates to go up. I always went above and beyond. I made them SO MUCH MONEY. Last year they stopped giving me work with zero warning... unless I cut my rates by A THIRD.
