Then she made a sound, something that sounded raw and wet and entirely too much like a sob for Ben’s liking. He took a few steps down the stairs and did the only thing he could think of. He coughed. The woman, Audrey’s, head popped up and looked at him, eyes widening in horror. “Please,” he said, raising his brows to her. “ Continue. I was very much enjoying playing a little game. Trying to guess exactly which…what did you say? Oh, yes ‘manipulative old bastards" you were referring too. He watched as her face told a story. The horror of her discovery faded into brief amusement, but then her eyes furrowed. First they were quizzical, like she was trying to figure him out. Then a scowl joined them and he knew before she spoke that she had figured out who he was. “You,” she said with almost as much venom as she had been cursing who it was that made her run. “I know you. And you are not to say one word to anyone.”
