A fun and gratifying event today at the oldest public library in the US, in Franklin, Mass. as governor Maura Healey signed the Massachusetts Freedom to Read Bill. The speeches were all really good. And kudos to @authorsabb.bsky.social and @massaabb.bsky.social for years of hard work.

A quick weekend boost. If I’m fully honest, I’m exhausted and want to go home badly. 😅 Can you help by boosting and helping spread this far and wide?
Hey all, bumping this: It’s been about two weeks since I last shared. I’m still working on listening to my doctor and getting home; it’s just a matter of lining everything up now. If you can share this or pass it along, I’d really appreciate it. gofund.me/60c131b09

A.I. Dressed Up As Fiction + short stories, literary hoaxes, & great aggregations
Gen AI has come for short fiction; bookish deceptions; book banning author guide; small press data; omelas inspired-fiction; speculative short fiction database; inspiring game deck; cold brew tea

My first reaction when I saw this headline was to sigh and type out (and then backspace) on a LONG list of ennui. But honestly? My second reaction is this: We can't fix what's happening at SCOTUS right now, but we can influence SCOTUS's future. Go pick two Senate candidates today to adopt.
Donald Trump v. Hillary Clinton is coming to the Supreme Court
The president said he wants to petition the justices in the 2016 election-related case.

A colleague in another area not affected by the mass layoffs emailed me about something else and added "I am thinking of you all - it is really tough what you are going through" and it legit made me tear up.
The good news is that I didn’t get mass layoffed today, which means I can continue talking about being a writer with a full time day job.

A trio of Senate Republicans from Indiana, Oklahoma, & Alabama have introduced S 4925 a copy of HR 7661- the exact same text, which would ban any book mentioning "gender dysphoria or transgenderism" from all public schools in the US. Please call your Senators to say NO to both bills! More info below
There are currently three federal book ban bills aiming to ban all trans books from U.S. public schools! HR 2616, HR 8705, HR 7661. Please call your representatives and ask them to vote no on these bills! Follow @authorsabb.bsky.social for updates. #bookbans #bookchallenges #HR2616 #HR8705 #HR7661
**Authors Against Book Bans, Response to S.4925, National Book Ban Bill** Here's @authorsabb.bsky.social statement in response to the national book ban bill: PLEASE take the time to read/share this. PLEASE call your reps. PLEASE encourage others to call their reps. Calling your reps DOES work.
... why are we leaning on market predictions and not doing the work? There's 100+ days between now and November. Please adopt two candidates on the House or Senate side, and put everything you have into helping them defend their seats or get elected.
Markets are predicting an 85% chance we flip the House and a 65% chance we flip the Senate. Can you imagine Trump in a world with actual checks and balances? Neither can he. That's why he's desperately trying to rig the election.
Adorable preschool art project or nightmare fuel from a horror movie?
Imagine if we made law enforcement a place where domestic abusers could not find work. Imagine how much safer we'd all be. Instead we've created a cultural institution that insulates abusers and ensures that even those not on the force are favored when their victims come forward.
WOW. The ex-wife of the ICE officer who shot a 26-year-old Colombian man in Maine has come forward to say that he had mental health issues and was abusive in their relationship. She says after the shooting he called asking her to vouch for him — instead, she went to the press.
Allison is SUCH an amazing person to talk book marketing with. Highly recommended!
I gave out way more marketing business cards than I was expecting at #Readercon so for those who missed it, yes! In addition to writing spec fic, I also coach writers on book marketing. That means I help writers pick the best strategies to promote their work and learn the jargon to self-advocate!
Collins wants the same force she helped finance to investigate itself. Her call for transparency is not courage. It is the smallest possible response from a senator who gave this force billions without requiring the safeguards that might have exposed its lies or prevented its abuses.
The Truth About the " Very Concerned" Senator Susan Collins Susan Collins voted in June to hand ICE and Border Patrol nearly $70 billion in multiyear funding without first demanding body cameras, evidence sharing, or independent oversight. Now an ICE agent has killed a man in Maine, and
JKR and her new org apparently helped get the new Amnesty International report on how TERF organizations destroy lives taken down from their site. Well, guess what? The Streisand Effect is real. Here's the entire report in a thread. Read it. Share it.
Amnesty International put out a major report documenting the influence of UK based anti trans gender critical organizations and their funding. Within hours, GC groups threatened defamation lawsuits and Amnesty was forced to pull it down. Proving the point they're anti rights. Anyways, here it is.
This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.
Here's a link to Levon's adoption page. His shelter name is Buddy Mac but I thought it sounded too much like a Kraft dinner for two. new.shelterluv.com/embed/animal...

Levon still needs a home but he really likes living with us. No, we are not going to just keep him. He had a visit with an adopter with a dog who LOVED Levon and wanted to play and wrestle and chase. But Levon isn’t like that. It wasn’t a good fit. He’s an old poet living within a 2yo dog.
This whole thread! As a teen, I read adult books because I was a big reader but I sought out YA because I wanted to see teens reflected on the page who were dynamic characters with their own agency and wants and stories.
Respectfully: -_-
Iowa folks, this will feature Jason Reynolds, Angie Thomas, Renée Watson, and Nikole Hannah-Jones. Go go go go go and bring as many young people as you can–what an incredible opportunity out of a *horrific* censorship situation in the state. (paywall bypass if needed: archive.ph/MEUNy)

And I'm also working on fixing the CA state law part:
Someone asked for an update on what's happening exactly, and here's the situation: California has a penal code - 13701. It's often misunderstood by police. They understand it as CA being a mandatory arrest state, when it's not. It's dependent on officers doing investigations and finding -
