Archeologists have uncovered two breathtaking, intricately carved mammoth ivory bird figurines from the Hohle Fels Cave in Germany. The newly discovered tiny Ice Age birds, one resting, one with wings outstretched, date back 40,000 years and weigh under 2 grams each.

<p> <span>Applications are invited for a PhD position as part of the Australian Research Council funded project The History of the Hourglass.</span> </p> <p> <span>This PhD research opportunity forms part of a project that undertakes the first history of the hourglass from its origins c.1300 through to its global circulation in the sixteenth century. The most precise time-measurement device of its era, the hourglass changed the course of history through its role in maritime travel, scientific experiments and everyday time management. It transformed time into a silent, interior flow crucial to a wide range of cultural projects: in Cairo classrooms or alchemical labs; in the cook’s kitchen or preacher’s pulpit. One advice I always try to impart to younger scholars is to read widely beyond one's topic, as this might provide very useful insights. I'm reminded of this today, as reading about Peruvian utopianism has provided me with a very good way of explaining the cult of saints in twelfth-century Norway.

This. This is what gets me about it: if they really believed they were beyond reproach, they wouldn’t mind being called anti trans. They couch their bigotry in other words because they know that they are persecuting a minority without cause.

Isn't it weird that this week a currently sitting president had to pay a woman MILLIONS of dollars for *raping* (and defaming) her—and the media has forgotten all about it? There was a time that this would have been the ONLY story—until the rapist was driving from office.
