Andria in DC

Managing tech, finance, advocacy, kids, community, and life. Barely. If we're serious about democracy and equality then we need #DCStatehood now.

Mitch McConnell’s communications director’s silence and smirk speak volumes. If he were fine, or even improving, she’d just say so. There’s no way this man is coming back.

Business that attack DC Home Rule — or the power of the officials we democratically elect — are not welcome in DC. We will stop purchasing your products and services and will do everything in our power to make sure others do the same.

D.C. officials thought they could work with Comer. A new bill blindsided them.

D.C. lawmakers say they were surprised when the House Oversight chair proposed a bill that would require congressional approval for any D.C. tax initiative.

Here’s why I just deactivated my DoorDash account when I normally order 1-3 times EACH WEEK from them. Stripping DC residents of self government and autonomy and inviting Congressional oversight that couldn’t be done anywhere else in the US. BYE FELICIA! #DumpDoorDash #DCStatehood #TheLastColony

In their letter, DoorDash seems to be conflating the passive congressional review that all of our legislation undergoes with active approval. Suffice to say, those are not even close to the same thing.

Fine to disagree on tax policy, but not fine to work with GOP to significantly limit DC home rule. If DoorDash thinks DC will accept them intervening in our tax code, they don't deserve our business. I've deleted my DoorDash account and encourage others to do the same.

In a statement, DoorDash tells me that the council passed the "arbitrary" new fee without holding any hearings. "We have always supported home rule for D.C.," says the company. "But will continue to defend D.C.'s small businesses, local economy, and underserved residents."

I just want to underscore the ridiculousness of this even further. Let’s say a company wants to relocate its HQ from [pick a state] to DC, and as part of the move DC has offered a tax incentive. The congressional delegation of that state would get to vote on that deal.

Even with this ANS, this would mean DC would need active congressional approval for things like local real property tax abatements, tax incentives for development deals, etc. This is an expansive overreach by the so-called party of small government.

The world is burning. The president is having hallucinations about election fraud on live television. ICE is murdering people in the streets. And Rep. James Comer thinks the problem we really need to address is that DC is setting our own local tax rates. #FOH

“Last year, Microsoft made $101 billion in profits, got a $12.5 billion tax break from Trump & paid its CEO $96 million. This year, it’s raising the price of an Xbox by $150 & eliminating 3,200 jobs. Please don’t tell me corporate tax breaks create jobs. It never trickles down.” - Bernie Sanders
