I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
Why are academics using GenAI to write articles, grade assignments, compose emails and a lot of other tasks that they would/should otherwise be doing themselves? A brief summary of our anonymous survey of over 200 academics' 'grey uses' of GenAI ... researchwhisperer.org/2026/07/21/a...

I’ve seen a lot of my colleagues’ interactions with Claude working on research problems & it would be easier for me to accept it as a serious scientific tool if it didn’t end every single response with the LLM equivalent of “you want fries with that?” — constantly trying to goad you into asking more
"But there is no honour for the humanities in regaining their standing through the attention of AI companies, if they engage only on the technology industry’s terms. In that case, they will have become important in exactly the wrong way." www.ft.com/content/bdb3...
Why this philosopher turned down Anthropic
The AI industry is courting the humanities — but it is asking the wrong questions

"One of Anthropic’s defining pieces of research appears in a paper entitled “On the Biology of a Large Language Model”. This is highly misleading: LLMs do not have any biology at all, because they are not alive. But in reading Anthropic’s paper one is invited quietly to forget this;.."

When we work with our data we have to decide who and what gets to be in the story. A number goes in the table or it doesn’t. A quote earns half a page, a passing mention, or nothing at all. T…

Anyone else wonder if the rise of One Nation is due to the social media companies trying to get payback at the Govt after the social media ban on kids by promoting more of PH and One Nation? 🤔
UK folks, let's jump on this AI regulation petition the Society of Authors emailed out! It's an actual parliament one so the government HAS to respond if it reaches the signature threshold. It calls for regulations to make AI developers disclose copyrighted works trained on. Sign & repost!! ❤️
Petition: Protect creators' rights: require AI firms to disclose training data
We ask the Government to introduce a statutory duty requiring AI developers to disclose the copyrighted works used to train generative AI in enough detail for creators to identify use of their work, e...

We're running a very short survey to explore why academics are increasingly turning to GenAI to do things that they know/feel they should probably be doing themselves (e.g. write peer reviews, draft papers, data analysis etc.) - please share (or fill in!): redcap.helix.monash.edu/surveys/?s=L...

Problem is: Neither our work culture nor our education culture incentivizes deep learning. Instead, we're incentivized to economize--to learn only what's needed to finish the task or get the answer right on the test. So, people use ChatGPT, even when they know they could learn more by other means.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other. Shared by @gizmodo.com: buff.ly/yAAHtHq

Turn off Gemini in Google! It's been turned on by default. Go to your Drive, click the gear icon, click settings, go to "manage apps" and uncheck that nasty "use by default" box. www.zdnet.com/article/how-...

So, Signal does what we can to provide a service w integrity in the concentrated ecosystem we're working in. We protect your comms w end-to-end encryption, so that we can use AWS and others as a highway across which to send Signal data in ways that don’t let AWS, or anyone else, gain access. 12/
In short, the problem here is not that Signal ‘chose’ to run on AWS. The problem is the concentration of power in the infrastructure space that means there isn’t really another choice: the entire stack, practically speaking, is owned by 3-4 players. 11/
In huge positive news, the Australian government just ruled out handing the work of their country’s creatives to AI companies for free 🙌 They resisted the well-funded tech lobby & shut down proposals to upend copyright law. Other governments should do the same! www.theguardian.com/technology/2...
If you're from a discipline that's unfamiliar with qualitative research, or methods like questionnaires, it may seem easy to use them, but it's not. Working with methodological experts will reduce research waste and mean you actually get useful answers to the things you want to know about.
When thinking about qualitative analysis, many think of coding by hand or software such as NVivo. However, there are many other ways. We're running a workshop working with different analytical tools combining rigour, creativity & fun. More info here: tinyurl.com/bzjpp2mk #QualAnalysis #CRMethods

Help! I’m an Early Career Researcher and genAI doesn’t know who I am

However you define political violence, the right is responsible for more of it. The Anti-Defamation League (hardly a left-wing org) found that all “domestic extremist-related killings” in 2022 were done by right-wing extremists, the vast majority (84%) white supremacists. trib.al/SaMpxtS
It’s Time to Broaden Our Definition of Political Violence
In conversations about Charlie Kirk’s murder, pundits and politicians are using the term in troublingly narrow ways.

A thread you can direct some action to this Monday morning. The damage the policy has done, and the mindset it encourages, is significant and ongoing. An Arts degree is good for so much more than getting a job (which it also does, contrary to popular mythology).
