Favourite genre: I read a LOT of fantasy and it has always pulled me in, so I guess that 7. A series/book that got me into reading: my dad read out the Asterix & Obelix and Tintin comics to us and they were foundational

Can you help by sharing or chipping in a few pounds/dollars/euro etc? Reading for pleasure is in real trouble and one of the blockers is access to recent, relevant books for kids that aren't tatty. If they can raise 1k euro they can get a book for every kid in the school #Booksky #KidLit

Finally read EW's LRB piece in full. Can see why she felt the way she did, and she's an expert with the scholarship to back it up, but I also disagree with a lot of it within the context. As @bookjockeyalex.bsky.social pointed out, there are adaptations and reimaginings. Nolan's is the latter.
For anyone who bought ‘The Arsenal Invincible Alphabet’ book for their kids or grandchildren, watch this space. There just may be a slightly more topical and current sequel in the pipeline. 😊

the Wilson post on LRB is a kind of accessible scholarly response masquerading as a film review, along the lines of the pieces the American Historical Review publishes about historicity of video games and movies. it's instantly recognizable to me because I'm in that world!
Yeah, two things can be true--you can genuinely enjoy and even love a movie and also have (or agree with) criticisms of it. This is normal and ok.
Chuck Wendig@chuckwendig.bsky.social · 2w agoI enjoyed Nolan's ODYSSEY quite a bit, and found it more moving than expected. I also read Wilson's critique and found that both enjoyable and insightful. It's not even really a bad review -- it's an incisive dissection from the POV of someone whose knives have long been sharpened on the material.
*whispers* you know we can do this cultural debate about art thing all the time, right? Websites and news organizations used to have culture critics on staff whose entire job was writing about books, movies, and TV. People read them and then discussed them. We have the technology to do this again.
This is an *excellent* point re: the difference between adaptations and reimaginings that I hadn't considered.

In that I think a great adaptation requires the core of thr character to be ported over, but a great reimagining doesn't. I don't think Nolan's The Odyssey is a great adaptation, but I do think it's a compelling reimagining.

It's hard to know where to begin. With all the other all-time greats, either they're done with international football 5-10 years younger than he is now, or it's done with them. Yet here he is, still the most impactful, most dangerous player at the entire tournament.
