it's helpful to make a practice of saying to yourself, "okay, the perfect solution you want does not exist and therefore isn't one of your choices. here are your choices. here are their upsides and downsides. pick one."
I cleaned this up, cut the obvious false starts and detours, and I'm starting this week just shy of 20k on this draft. Aiming to get it to 30k by the week's end (with a few more thousand words earmarked for distractions and next month's short story, probably).

As I get back into novel drafting I've found that once I know my wordcount capabilities—say 15k a week right now—it helps to set aside a chunk of that for Magpie Writing.
