Enjoyed this post. It's interesting how we talk about "fiction first" even though most "fiction first" games contain an XP mechanic which is just counting points until you get an advance. I'm largely a fiction-first designer but there's nearly always bits where it's mechanics talking to mechanics.

Cool design mini-thread. I might add, adjusting the metaphor: if you play basketball on bicycles, that's cool and you can have fun with it, but you're no longer playing the same game. You shouldn't be surprised if the game no longer works, or works differently. (Hopefully that's what you wanted.)

I find the "rules are toys" framing of TTRPG design useful for several reasons: 1. The idea that system matters is reducible to recognising that toys have affordances; while there's no "wrong" way to play with a toy, no amount of open-mindedness will readily fit a bicycle through a basketball hoop.

Had a great livestream yesterday lunchtime with @armadajosh.bsky.social and @ickbat.bsky.social. We got deep into using relationship questions in #ttrpgs, what they are for, great examples and how best to use them. As always our comments section was amazing and full of really insightful stuff!
