Fae: “Tell us your true name.” Me: “…Just my name? No birthdate, no SSN, no fingerprint scan, no address, no mother’s maiden name? Are you sure you’ve even got the right Olivia Waite? There’s like six.” Fae: “What the hell kind of bargains have you been making?” Me: “They call it health insurance.”
Something I like about mamdani that seems to be crazy rare for big city mayors is he actually enjoys the people who live in his city
At the Ecuadorian Parade yesterday in NYC. Mamdani is down with the furries.
they are attempting to end women’s sports by making being sexually assaulted a requirement for entry
An initiative on the ballot in Washington state in November would require all athletes seeking to play girl's sports from kindergarten to high school to undergo "genetic screening, a testosterone-levels test, or an examination of their reproductive anatomy" before they can play
My experience is of every American COVID-19 mitigation effort being obviously insufficient, and ended far too soon. To see people now argue that they somehow were too much, going too far? Not anti-vax or MAGA people, but folks just out here on Bluesky? It staggers me.
Friends, I've been in this business quite a while, and been on panels at many conventions. But I've never had a literal tornado warning in the middle of a panel cause a group from another panel--about writing sex--to have to shelter in our room. And OUR panel topic, you ask? Improvisation. :D
I am a cisgender dude and even I am absolutely APPALLED at how cis* women are treated by our medicine establishment. *Also trans men, obviously, though they have EVEN MORE bullshit they have to deal with.
Leading up to getting an endometriosis diagnosis, I had to get ton of tests to rule out cancer, despite it NEVER being cancer, and every test was absolutely horrible. Sticking, poking, scraping, and not in the fun way. Fucking hell, we need better pain management for this shit.
If you're queer, by any interpretation of the word, you should sign up for this. It's a truly delightful little bit of light in the darkest part of the year.
You need this. And you deserve good things. Really.
Rich people invented poverty and they've been complaining about it ever since.
In less fun news, someone I've been supporting on Patreon for a while now started posting HP content today. So I *immediately* cancelled and made sure to say exactly why on the cancellation form.
Cats: The Jellicle Ball is AMAZING. I'm so so so glad I made this last minute trip up to NYC to see it before it closes next weekend. So joyous. So energized. So unapologetically queer. Tens across the board.
As we enter the last week of Hugo voting, a reminder that October Daye is up for Best Series, and winning would be made SO MUCH SWEETER by the fact that I could take my trophy and inform the room "I'm going to Disneyland," then ACTUALLY DO IT, since Disneyland will be less than a mile away. WOW!
I don't know how to explain to the people who pop up when creatives complain about "AI" to say there are legit uses for it just how much they sound like someone saying "Well actually fire is used to make bread" when people are talking about an organized arson ring burning down their fucking houses
Tech bros continuing to threaten me with a good time. 🤞
AI boom could falter without wider adoption, Microsoft chief Satya Nadella warns
This week's Friday Night Movie was The Devil Wears Prada 2. It was...fine. Felt good to spend a couple hours with familiar characters, even if it was mostly just rehashing the story beats from the first movie (which was comfortable in its own way, too).
You don’t want hands free driving, you want trains. You want trains you want trains you want TRAINS
Slept like shit last night. Apparently my brain decided it's been far too long since it kept me awake all night by not shutting up. So today I'm running on a combined total of ~3 hours of sleep. Whee.
It is going to be easier for Democrats win by telling the racist white women to fuck off than by telling Black people, Hispanic people, and queer people to fuck off.
A spaceship landed in the park. A door dilated and a distraught alien emerged. "What's happened to the library? It's gone! The one thing your civilization had going-" "They moved to a new building," a passer-by said. "Don't you have ways of finding these things out?" "Yes. I ask at the library."
150,000 marched yesterday in London for trans rights. Opened the Sky News app. Scrolled and scrolled. Nothing. BBC News app. Nothing. Guardian app. Nothing. This is what actual silencing looks like.
This week's Friday Night Movie: Masters of the Universe. Y'all, it's good! I'm sad it bombed in theaters. It's silly, it's campy, it's FUNNY. They knew exactly what movie they were making, and they leaned into it. Give it some love on streaming and MAYBE we'll get the sequel teased in the credits.
Disability accommodations aren’t taking anything from anyone. The quiet room doesn’t force anyone to be quiet elsewhere. The ramp doesn’t break the stairs. “If we accommodate you, we’d have to accommodate everyone” Yes. Correct. That’s the idea. Precisely.
out-of-context Gay D&D quote: "Why is the black one bigger than all of the white ones?"
"Trans people require lifelong medical care" Everyone requires lifelong medical care you fucking dipshit
Expounding a bit: I know The Gays are not a monolith, but their ideological bell curve skews HEAVILY to the left. So what do you think is going to happen when you wipe out an ENTIRE GENERATION of Gays in the 80s/90s? The broader population of that age group is going to look more conservative!
A related interpretation I've come across is that for a good chunk of the last ~century, those who have trended "liberal" have, for a whole array of reasons (often due to "conservative" policies, creating a feedback loop), simply DIED before they were old enough to be the 'elders' in these polls.
My first two are Gonzo & Kermit for precisely the same reasons @brewergnome.bsky.social gives. But my 3rd is Statler & Waldorf [they count as a single unit - no, I will not allow arguments to the contrary] because I can be a cantankerous curmudgeon who lobs shade at those around me.
Three is harder... Gonzo - I'm weird and have spent most of my life feeling like I didn't quite fit in. Kermit - I mostly hold it together in emergency, even though I'm screaming and flailing inside. Marjory the Trash Heap - I'm a pile of trash, but people think I know what I'm talking about
The most recent entry in the I'm-late-to-the-party TV shows: Shrinking (on Apple). This show has been showered with praise from people I respect, but OMFG WOW it's blown me away nonetheless. I've just started S3 [no spoilers pls] but absolutely in love with everything about this show.
