i am very sick and tired of people bringing up "consent" as a reason for why transformative works should be disallowed. yes even when the transformative works involve lots of complicated machine statistics. firstly; consent is for sex and risky activities, not "am i allowed to use bits of your work"

Spreadsheet person by day, model-making and sculpture artist, 3D printing fan and dog-lover by night. It seems all the dystopian novels I read as a teenager prepared me for the modern world. Unfortunately.
The ultimate effect of all the “leave politics out of technology” guys is that I now need to do a background check before adopting any piece of software to avoid financing the extermination of arbitrary groups of people. Good job, guys. 👏
CALLING LONDONERS 📣 My friend has spent FIVE YEARS developing her play—a queer horror story—and she's hardly sold any tickets. She's travelling down from Leeds and I'm devastated 🥺 The Haunting of Verity Evans, The Hope Theatre, 25th–26th August. I hope you'll join me! Please share if you can't!
Been testing this 'sign-language-to-text' (SL2T) for almost a year & it's so awesome to see this out! Looked at this almost a decade ago & knew we'd get the tech & ML models there eventually (but super challenging). Talking w/ some Deaf folks, an equivalent of 'voice-to-text' was huge for them
Putting sign language AI into users’ hands
Introducing sign-language-to-text (SL2T), our breakthrough model powering new sign language features for Deaf and hard of hearing users.

There’s some conversation in the Atmosphere right now about how we turn @atproto.com projects into sustainable businesses. One of the biggest opportunities is sitting right in front of us: give publishers back the audience development business they spent the last 20 years outsourcing to platforms.
For thousands of years, a solar eclipse has been a prophetic harbinger of a spectacular, epoch-making event. Just saying. #VoteBinface #Clacton
I'm going to go ahead and predict that there will be at least one headline in the coming says along the lines of: "Man blinded because ChatGPT said it would be safe to watch Eclipse through old timey magnifying glass."

PLEASE SHARE THIS To the young person (longish dark hair, patterned waistcoat, chinos & DM boots) who left this scroll of papers on the Piccadilly Line train at South Kensington station at about 4.25pm today, I’ve handed it to the station staff at Hammersmith.
People in the replies seem confused so: slop is a genre invented by humans. Mr Beast videos, for example: hyper-optimized for the algorithm, soulless, plastic. Pre-AI. AI slop is merely a mass-produced reflection of the worst parts of human nature, at scale. It's really bad! But we did it first.

Under a Binface government, anyone who doesn’t accept human-made climate change as fact will be sent back to school, from Year 1 right the way to A Levels, to see if anything goes in the second time round. #VoteBinface
In case you weren't aware, there is a solar eclipse visible from the UK on 12th August! We'll be able to see about 90% totality (assuming there isn't any bloody cloud) I've just ordered these eclipse glasses recommended by everyone's favourite BlueSky astronomer
Hello love! Flimsy ones are fine—the celestron here are a good shout: celestron.co.uk/products/ecl... I have a hard plastic pair, but i do go after eclipses quite a lot! More stuff on the eclipse: www.theastroholic.co.uk/august-solar...
Very slight correction that I feel like an ass for pointing out, there was no almost, by the time Nightshade came out, LoRAs were already the go-to approach for style transfer, and it notably does not work on LoRAs. The most dead something's ever been on arrival.
It was sad watching artists rip down years, decades even, of web galleries full of comments and stats and proof of life before generative AI just to reupload it with some sketchy anti-AI overlay applied. Training methods mooted it almost instantly, and the damage to art history is permanent.
The sad/funny/infuriating thing about Nightshade is that artists think they feed it their image and get their image back with some sort of protection added, when in fact what they get back is really a genAI copy of their image with "poisoned"* latents. *doesn't actually provide protection.
I will never forgive the nightshade/glaze crowd for straight-up lying to artists and making them reupload all of their portfolios with an ugly-ass filter that actually does literally nothing
This is cultural suicide and intellectual vandalism. In an era where humanities-illiterate tech bros have unearned god-like powers, we need historians, philosophers, ethicists, classicists more than ever. Please sign. (Reposting without 404) www.change.org/p/stop-redun...

Londoners, there is a webpage for you to see where your nearest "cool spaces" are when the extreme heat hits - places with water, air-conditioning & shade. Have a look and spread the word, especially to those who may need this but might not think to look for it: apps.london.gov.uk/cool-spaces/
I see the AI Art Is Theft bores are out again. Remixing, referencing, riffing, recombining, that's the entire history of the internet. And of culture, full stop. Clay Shirky documented it exhaustively in Here Comes Everybody. Every meme, fanfic, and parody account operates on exactly this logic ffs.

They're not even worse games! AI lets you make *better* games than a small team could've made at any point prior! This is an *unmitigated* win across the board and these people refuse to take it!
"B-but... not THOSE kinds of games! Not ones made like THAT!" You are getting exactly what you wished for.
Our statement on the UK gov't's demand that all content on all devices sold or used in the UK be scanned, on the presumption of nudity, using a dystopian combination of age verification & content scanning. This proposal will not safeguard children. It endangers us all. signal.org/blog/pdfs/20...

To be extremely clear, this is fraud. SpaceX's "valuation" will be met by indexes voluntarily rigging their own rules on profitability and passive investment, and I think if someone had fallen into a coma in 2022 and woke up today they would assume this is all an extremely poor joke.
If you build software, whether you use AI to help you build it, it uses AI, or neither, and humans use it, it must center and empower the human, not you, not the technology, but the person your technology is there to help.
Hello, I'm going through a lot these days, it would mean the world if you can share this so maybe I can reach someone willing to buy or commission me something. Thank you 🙏
