Fostering an ecosystem for science on the Atmosphere 🌐 https://atproto.science/

I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS!! 6+ months of work by SO many people is converging on a fantastic thing for researchers online. We want to democratize access to research infrastructure online, for good, and we've put together an amazing team to make it happen. ❤️

The modern research ecosystem of online tools and communities is controlled by for-profit companies. But we think that researchers should be the priority - not the product. So, we're announcing Aster ID: not-for-profit Atmosphere account hosting for researchers.

I made a little social bibliography atproto app. You can post papers you read and see what your friends are reading. Paper info autofills from links, and it exports to bibtex. There's chronological and following only feeds, maybe more to come, and you can organize papers into lists for your own use.

We heard there were a lot of @atproto.science discussions here... Watch this space ;) (and welcome @mirascience.bsky.social !)

Modular Interoperable Research Attribution@mira.science · last wk.

Notes from our kick-off workshop in Ireland this June 🍀 @scios.tech worked with @discoursegraphs.bsky.social to facilitate a fantastic workshop of 20+ researchers, technologists, and open science leaders to design and build a new modular medium for research! Participating people/orgs >

"A counterculture does something else entirely. It finds the ungoverned space, builds the parallel system, and reaches the audience first. The mainstream is then forced to respond to something it had neither authorised nor understood." Great theory of change for science (and a lot of other fields)

A counterculture does something else entirely. It finds the ungoverned space, builds the parallel system, and reaches the audience first.

The mainstream is then forced to respond to something it had neither authorised nor understood.

It’s less about heroism and it’s also not about victimhood.

It is more of a niche-serving approach.

You find the use case the dominant system cannot see, or cannot afford to serve, or has actively written off as worthless. You build for that. You make it work for the people who need it. And you let the alternative become obsolete not by confronting it, but by making it irrelevant.

That is the crux of it.

Rewildpunk: The Counterculture AI Actually Needs by @abiawomosu.bsky.social: Plurality over monoculture. Relationship over command. Local usefulness over universal scale. Human judgement over automatic optimisation. And infrastructure people can shape & steward, over platforms they merely consume

I tell you, the match between #atproto and open academic publishing is made in heaven. If we have learned anything from the for-profit-publishing, AI slop, and Twitter/X polycrisis, the future of academic publishing is decentralized eprints on #atproto, an it may well begin right here.

Alongside a bunch of bug fixes, we've got a few new features on chive.pub we're excited about. Most of them involve connecting a paper to other things that relate to it on the Atmosphere and beyond.

Would ppl be interested in an @atproto.science hack session at the Aug 22 @atproto.nyc community day? Things like AI for science, hacking on @semble.so, Lea, feeds, @paper-feed.bsky.social, atmospheric personal sites for researchers Tagging locals that might be around (feel free to tag more) >

we've shared previously that we were planning another community day for August 22nd at @recurse.com, here are the details! more to come soon on talks and workshops 👀
