Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to me @gamespodcast.bsky.social about the layoffs at id Software. We have been very proud to make games so many people loved. Some of the best game developers in the business were let go for reasons that aren't clear and I don't know how to make sense of it

It really sucks when someone you were following for their work in the retro scene turns out to be big on AI and using it in all their projects. That instantly kills any and all interest in anything they ever make.

What if I told you that all of the Publishing Agreements I have reviewed in the last 6 months (several dozen) included a no gen AI provision, wherein the use of gen AI in development is a material breach, but companies like Epic and EA are still trying to convince us the industry is cool with it

He's only gone and written 2,500 more words about how game devs feel about generative AI. Latest piece quotes around two dozen different people with an indie background. When asked how they feel about gen AI, not one, but two devs responded, "Fuck that shit." www.gamesradar.com/games/it-cre...

The main way in which AI has negatively impacted games industry jobs is not through actual automation of those jobs or even untrue claims about automation. It's by making capital unavailable because it's tied up in AI investments while also destroying the consumer base for video game hardware.

generative AI is a dead-end technology that creates output without intention that is practically useless for any serious use case and the only fact it's taking years to fail is because of the trillions pumped into it by the business idiots

Just a little layout I prepared for Quake Deathmatch Jam which is going on right now. Uncertain if this sees the light of day because I'm busy and it is up to someone else to fix and art.

Top down out of bounds screenshot of Quake Deathmatch Jam map layout. Map uses prototype textures.

Just as an aside, PS3 emulation has gotten real good AND they've got custom multiplayer servers up and running. Folks have been playing Castlevania: Harmony Of Despair (the wild mega-scale co-op dungeon crawler - no other game like it) on PC for a while now.
