Once you understand the corporate culture of AI hyperscalers is everyone cooking their brains by locking themselves in the bathroom, holding flashlights under their chins, and saying "Aaaaaaaaaay Eyeeeeeee" until they wet themselves in terror, things snap into focus: pluralistic.net/2023/06/04/a...

I am becoming incredibly exhausted of this pattern: many people: "AI sucks!" Very Smart Person: ah but have you considered (distinct application of ML or statistical modeling that has no real relationship to what the tech industry is marketing as, and people broadly perceive as, "AI")
apropos of nothing, here's a terrific feature about a meaningful, life-saving use of artificial intelligence, which I have been thinking about for over a year. it's just extremely stupid to say that AI has zero benefits even if you don't think it should be used in writing (which I don't)!
AI RANT Following the cancellation of three major debut book deals over AI suspicions, I decided to put my own (needless to say, 100% human-written) prose to the test. My detector of choice was Originality AI, and the results proved to be jarring, to say the least. 🧵1/5
I wouldn't call myself a cartoonist, but I had the vision and just needed it to be on paper to the best of my ability.
This is heartbreaking 😢 If you know of any roles, Alejandro is a wonderful game director and a great human.
We just started redundancy process. I’ve been told that my role is at risk, although no decision has been made at this stage. Naturally, it’s not an easy place to be, and my thoughts are with everyone affected. Please if you know any affected show them some love and support.
One of the great things about living in London is the many events I get to go to! Yesterday I saw Sunyi Dean, Eliza Chan and Claire North, and got my books signed 🤘
I'm just gonna say: it somewhat baffles me that people who are understandably skeptical of opaque LLMs as legitimate sources of information will suddenly go full on "the computer KNOWS" when they are using opaque tools to "detect" AI. The computer does not know.
❤️ Gillian Green, publisher at Tor Bramble, told The Bookseller: “HM Wolfe has confirmed that Daggermouth was written entirely without AI. We stand behind our author, and we do not recognise third-party AI detection tools as a fair or reliable measure of authenticity when used on their own.”
Good. Right now this only applies to social media, but it's only a matter of time before it applies to products as well. That would mean that any game studio planning to sell in the EU - i.e all of them - would need to disclose their Gen AI use or risk some hefty fines. Bring it on.
In an effort to prevent my Bluesky account from being just me complaining about AI, I thought I’d end the month talking about the things that made me happy. First up: my fave read this month was The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. If you’re into Greek retellings, this is an excellent one.
Still the best speech in the LOTR trilogy. And feels extremely relevant to the times we live in. A lot of days do feel this hopeless.
The absolute gut punch of seeing mentors and heroes fall for the ai grift. Seeing their avatars flip to ugly generated art, their posts start to read like they were generated… lashing out at people who’ve clearly privately tried to walk them back to reality. We’re losing a lot of 50+ nerds to this
Scoop: The AI music generator Suno was hacked. Hacker shared source code that shows how the tool was made and part of the music and podcasts that were scraped to create it. Decades worth of music, lyrics, and podcasts from YouTube, Deezer, Genius & more www.404media.co/hack-reveals...

The iPhone-maker claims OpenAI encouraged poached employees to bring over confidential presentations, secret prototypes, and key supplier details.

sorry we can't afford to pay workers to make videogames, we threw all our money into a hole . no one likes or wants to use the hole and the hole also makes video games more expensive. the hole also drinks all our water
Sick. Awesome. Thanks for that. Really preferred this to funding a Blade game by the Dishonored people or people at Obsidian having jobs.
Night 2 of the Metallica concert in London. What a dream come true to watch them live!
How cool is Metallica’s illustration for their London show?
If you’re in London and in need of refuge from the heat, the Tate Modern has a/c and some cool art.
Lying is bad unless you do it via AI. False advertising is bad unless you do it via AI. Plagiarism is bad unless you do it via AI. Losing billions of dollars for no good reason is bad unless you do it via AI. Robbing cities of water is bad unless you do it via AI. You’re just embracing the future.
This cartoon by Ella Baron from the Guardian today actually made me well up a little. We will keep fighting. Together.
oh no, i don't use the ai for <thing that i am paid to do> it's terrible at that. it's great for <thing you are paid to do> though.
Happy Directive 8020 launch day! I’m so happy to have played a small part in bringing this game to life. Congrats to the team! 🤘👩🚀
