"...under the leadership of the Big Five and their equally hegemonic national retail partners, the flagship product favored by elite-facing bookstores in wealthy enclaves got cheaper, and the format with the proven mass potential got many times more expensive." 📚 jacobin.com/2026/10/book...

Publishers Killed the Paperback, Then Blamed Readers

In 1939, the 25-cent paperback made America a nation of readers, delivering thrillers, classics and Pulitzer-winning books. So why did the Big Five publishers just kill the mass market paperback?

"Authors First gives authors full creative control, final-cut approval and fair compensation, using Al and other technology as production tools. For fans, it creates a 'watch the book' experience as the author imagined it and brought it to life." May you fail so badly that nobody tries again.

This was Copenhagen yesterday. The European establishment's abysmal failure on Israel/Gasa is not shared by the European public. The gap between the two is untenable. The public will eventually prevail, but Europe's moral collapse will take years to repair.

Victoria Strauss is of course _the_ resource for this but literally just saying to whoever "hey, you don't know who I am, but I just got a contract from [magazine] and I don't know if this part is normal" is socially fine. We may or may not be able to answer but we can point you to people who will.

apropos of previous thread by John Wiswell: writers have a lot of solidarity when it comes to contracts. if you are a new writer and you think something might be hinky about your contract, it is completely fine to ask other professional writers even (especially) if you don't know us.

As Indigenous People’s Day approaches I want to lovingly offer the practice that those of us who are salaried & get holidays off donate at least a portion of that paid day of day’s wages to the communities & causes we’re meant to be centering on i.e. Indigenous People’s Day and Juneteenth.

This week's firestorm around MRM kicked off when it became apparent they were trying to grab the rights to cover art by the beloved and excellent artist John Picacio. It's important to stipulate that John is *already* super generous with his rights! Many other artists who do zine covers are, too.

I own copyright on the vast majority of cover art I’ve created. And yes, I own the right to make prints of that art. But even when fans demand I make prints upon book release, I don’t do it @ that time. Why? Because I want the author and publisher to make $$$$$. But those art rights remain mine.
