My parents, 67 and 70, are addicted to their ebikes after I converted them a year and a half ago. They do live in the Fraser Valley, so they still drive, but my mum proudly sent us "Dropped off the library books by ebike before the trip!" before heading off for two weeks of bike riding in Belgium.

Credit to @lucymaloney.bsky.social for being the only Vancouver city councillor (!?!?) to vote in favour of the Villages Plan to legalize medium-sized apartments in a large number of neighbourhoods across the city. Otherwise a major disappointment for the city.

I love this so much. Most people advocating for active transportation and safer streets aren't saying *no one* should drive. We're saying that driving should not be the *default* for everyone. We're saying that people deserve *choices*. Yet we are viewed as extremists for this suggestion.

The defendant is not comfort. The defendant is comfort installed as the default; provided at zero cost, written into the code, made compulsory for everyone including the people it does not serve, and then quietly removed from the list of things a citizen is permitted to ask about. Accommodation is something a society provides for a person who needs it. A default is something it requires of everyone, whether they need it or not. The first is care. The second is a mandate that has been mistaken for natural law so long that we now defend it the way people defend a god; which is to say, not with reason but with faith and devotion.

I am well-off, so I can afford solar panels and an electric vehicle and a good bike. As a result, my local travel is effectively free per mile. The Sam Vimes Boots Theory of Socio-Economic Unfairness applies.

Well this is... True. Yikes. I've had drivers exit their vehicles and assault me, drive onto bike trailer behind me, all for banging the hood of their car after they tried to kill me.

I actually find it quite telling that socially and legally drivers can ram people and run people over if they feel at all fearful, but cyclists and pedestrians can't even hard slap a car after nearly being killed without the cops immediately siding with the driver.

Human: 150-250lb Human on bike: 200-300lb Human on ebike: 200-350lb Human in car: 2000-5000lb No, electric mobility is not a middle ground between cars and acoustic bikes. Cars are 1 order of magnitude off in terms of weight and about 5 orders of magnitude off in terms of risk.

This is disgraceful - it's okay to cut down trees to expand a fucking parking lot in a walkable neighbourhood but it's apparently unethical to do the same for housing. Yes, those were ornamental trees. But speaking as a teacher, schools need trees for shade during warmer months. Desperately.

To residents upset about the loss of trees at Willows Elem: OB bylaws require a certain # of parking spaces at childcare sites. Tearing down trees is fine, as long as it's not for housing! Variance might've been ok'd but would've delayed project to 2027 and + costs. www.sd61.bc.ca/news-events/...

I would highly prefer that the throttle on my bike cut out at like 10kmh and only be used for launch. I only use it for going up hills, or launching with traffic to avoid being murdered by drivers where bike lanes are absent and you have to use left turn lanes/share space with cars.

We’re using the word e-bike to describe too many things. Electric assist bikes are a version of bike & have many public interest benefits. But vehicles being driven by food delivery app drivers aren’t a form of bike…they’re a form of motorcycle. They don’t belong on sidewalks or pedestrian streets.
