playtest material has space for a few event reports its first issue. We aren't that interested in convention reports, but if you know of a game design event, workshop, talk or jam that you think produced work or opinions which would be of interest to the mag, please send us a 400-600 word summary!

This is a great episode if you're like me and you kind of have a broad idea of the recent FIFA shenanigans but not the dirty deets.

every D&D campaign I’ve been in but one has ended prematurely in DM burnout and tears and almost every non-D&D game has come to a satisfying conclusion and I don’t think the system is a coincidental factor in this

I love what Amaan is doing here!! I wish I had the time and energy to put into consistent AP reviews, but I'm realising it's just not doable for me except on a very small/occasional scale. It would be amazing to see this work supported by outlets to make it more possible!

I feel more APs should be reviewed that just the few big ones and that too on channels like CharacterSheet or Polygon [RIP]. I implore @rascal.news and @thefandomentals.bsky.social to do more of these! If not, I'm gonna do what I can! :D Lastly, many thanks to @ragepandapajamas.bsky.social <3

I don't think you can play some girthy euro that is mostly parallel solitaire then expect players to lock in from start to finish. So game choice is the key lever to yank

If there's stuff they need to watch for & plan you could offer a steer on what they could be thinking about between turns. But if turns are long & essentially solitary, can you let them disengage during that downtime? Why can't they eat snacks, check their phone or chat with other inactive players?

Depends on the game - with some games this is a design flaw, where turns are long & too much changes to make planning for one's next turn feasible. So to start with, choose games with simultaneous turns, short turns, or dynamic turns where I might get something from your actions (e.g. Concordia)

What's the best way to keep players engaged when it's not their turn, specifically inexperienced players who are grappling with the rules so are slower?

Okay so we’ve got five pregens at each table, right? And they’re all the same set of characters, except I changed the names slightly. There’s a central table, the Cathedral, where players can meet to discuss tactics - but when they meet they are absorbed into one another. For fun!

GLOBAL SCENARIO OVERVIEW
The Moon Beneath is emerging into the eponymous Cathedral, and the Heart doesn’t like that. It’s sending everything it’s got to stop the summoning. The Scryatrices of the Moon Beneath, blind prophets all, have pooled what remains of their magic and summoned five saints, or hallows, from alternate dimensions to lead the defence of the temple.

But: the magic is less than exact, and each hallow is split into five bodies, each a little different from one another. (Those are the thirty player characters.) There’s no time to fix it - armies of the Heart are marching wetly towards them - so we’ll just have to take what we can get.

Complete the birthing ritual of the moon. Gather the faithful. Man the defences. Evacuate the weak. Blow up a bridge. Rip the wings off an Angel. Fight a carnivorous forest. Fire a moon laser into a meat kajiu. Die beautiful and dangerous.
SAINT AMALGAM RULES

Each player is part of a reincarnated saint from an alternate reality, and when they come close, they will merge into a single luminous being. If players meet themselves at the central table (or elsewhere), they will meld into one body controlled by both people; there are five of each saint, and each one added to the amalgam unlocks additional abilities detailed on their character sheets.

When the amalgam saint rolls dice to resolve an action, all players inside them roll and pick high. When they inflict stress, same rules apply, but increase stress by 1 for each other dice that matches the highest rolled.

The more selves you jam in a single body, the less you need to worry about “rolling dice” and “following the rules.”
Some example Hallow (Saint) abilities.

Hallow Abilities
When you make contact with another version of yourself, bond with them forever. You are all the same character operating out of a single body. When you roll dice, you all roll and pick high. The more of your alternate selves you absorb, the greater your power becomes:

BALSAM X 2 Once, bring a delver back from the dead
BALSAM X 3 You can affect a mass battle as though you were accompanied by a unit
BALSAM X 4 Once, clear all stress marked at your table
BALSAM X 5 Once, everyone in the room clears a fallout

I’m happy to report that the unique mechanic in the GenCon multi-table Heart game - that players who are playing the same pregens are actually shards of the same reincarnated saint from slightly different realities, and if they meet they instantly glom together into one body - is going well

Screenshot of Zeb’s post on our discord. Photo (next slide) is attached. “This table has two characters at it, this scenario fucking rules”Better-quality version of the attached picture. The GM is excitedly raising her hands and talking to a group of ten Heart players, who are playing two characters between them. As players glom together they just add their dice pools when they make actions, and gain access to ever-greater powers. Seeing as there’s a maximum occupancy of five players per saint, this indicates two incredibly powerful player characters
