I love this thread, and can't resist adding a fuller discussion of the sculptures from Tiberius's grotto at Sperlonga, one of which appears near the end. Large sculptures of scenes from the Trojan Cycle were set up in the shadows of a cave. A dining platform appeared just beyond the cave, but (1/)

Everyone's comparing Nolan's Odyssey to Homer, but I think there's much more richness The ancient Greeks adapted the Odyssey into ART While these images might appear static to us, I want to walk through how an ancient Greek saw art: AS DYNAMIC STORYTELLING like our films 1/13

my favorite religious theory is that "biblically accurate angels" is just someone tripping balls who encountered a peacock for the first time

It's simply not serious. But it pleases right wing billionaires, so US Today funds and publishes it. Just be aware that almost no news national outlet is actually your friend. There might be many good folks working there and many good individual articles, but institutionally, they're terrible.

Don't get me wrong: it is very cool to still be growing back new hair more than a year after starting thyroid medication, but sometimes I be waking up in the mornings looking like I just rolled out from under a blackberry bush Silk bonnet doesn't do a damned thing but conceal the surprise.

My general sense right now is that it is most successful as an ideological project. It exploited media fragmentation, then accelerated it, and is closing in on capturing and institutionalizing the resulting chaos. Pretty successful capturing courts, if you consider that an ideological project too.

Something I think that underlies a lot of debates within the Democratic party and center-left right now is whether or not you think Trumpism has been successful as a political and ideological project. (Not, obviously, whether it's been good or not).

“It is profitless to speculate on error.” Once again I must stress that my grandmother talked like this all the fucking time, she could have been describing a salad that wasn’t as good as she was hoping it would be

All right, but let's assume that I'm right.

I have just been sent the transcript of a deposition my grandmother gave in 1977 while she was serving as an expert witness in a series of tribal rights cases and let me tell you, if nothing else this is proof that I come by it honest for every conceivable value of “it”

The shaman of Bad Dürrenberg are the remains of a 25-35 year old woman, who was buried 8600 to 9000 year ago in Germany. Around her, were the remains of an extraordinary head-dress, made from the bones and teeth of different animals such as deer, wild boar, crane and turtle.

The Shaman of Bad Dürrenberg is a 9,000-year-old archaeological discovery of a 25-35 year old woman buried in Germany with an extraordinary animal-bone headdress.Headdress Materials: The ritual garment included bones and teeth from various animals, including deer, wild boar, crane, and turtle.Archaeological Status: As one of the oldest burials in Central Germany, her grave goods—including painting implements and clay—indicate she held a special social status, likely as a shaman.Reconstruction: The image on the right is a modern reconstruction based on the remains found on the left.

I want to emphasize: When I say "no" I mean no. If you're buying like, merch from some seller whose money doesn't go directly to JKR, you're still supporting Harry Potter. Every cis person who gives themselves permission to still consume this IP makes it appear okay to others. Stop it. Cut it out.

There is no non-complicit enjoyment of Harry Potter, in 2026. Every time you stream a Harry Potter movie or buy one of her books, etc., you are helping her campaign to end trans lives, full stop.

Gwen is one of the kindest people on this site. She called out (in the gentlest, sincerest way possible) a game show host who, instead of politely acknowledging or just ignoring the rebuke, responded with all the mediocre-white-man sensitivity of a Richard Dawson going in for an unwanted grope.

since this has now happened several times this week i feel the need to say that cis people trying to “well, actually” me (or any other trans person) on the fascist dissolution of our rights and the engines thereof just isn’t going to go well. if you feel challenged by something i said, sit with it

I actually really feel like there’s a ton of overlap between men deep in the tech/STEM space developing AI psychosis and the way NXIVM’s Keith Raniere played Mark Vicente, the “What the Bleep Do We Know” filmmaker

The thing about this Hank Green crap is that intelligent people are very susceptible to cult recruitment and brainwashing because they're more able to rationalize it to themselves.

I know I wrote a whole article on "why do I feel uncomfortable in wholesome spaces? often it's because they're run by people who are very alt right and here's how that works" but man, I feel like I gotta write about how some people's idea of liking art is basically to treat it like buying funkos

In an incident I absolutely do not recall happening a few weeks ago, one of our very young guests apparently hit Jeremy with a hula hoop, so his grandma said they had to go home. Today he and his brother sent apology cards and a dollar for Jeremy to buy snacks.

I realize these are all things that sex workers have told us and could tell us better. Consumer-facing AI is basically a sex worker so of course it’s personalizing various iterations of financial domination for men because that’s what they want.
