folks can complain about the effectiveness of scheduled orderly mass protest but to think about it another way its the closest thing we have to the opening scene of A Muppet Christmas Carol where all the muppets sing "there goes Mr. Dipshit, there goes Mr. Ass" to Scrooge and it clearly bothered him

Hard to overstate how transformative Jane Goodall was as a scientist. She took the best of the scientific method--empirical observation--and used it to push back on existing scientific orthodoxies.

RIP Jane Goodall. There's so much to say about her career, her activism, her science. Primatology was the home of so many bigoted approaches to race, gender, and animality when she arrived and the field became more humane because of her. A truly transformative figure.

I think this is what is most enraging about the damage they're doing not just to US alliances & partnerships, but to the federal govt, science & universities. They are vandalizing, defacing and destroying public goods that were the product of collective effort and sacrifice & belong to all of us.

Yes, the cavalier disregard for assets collectively built up through intergenerational labor and in this case joint sacrifice reminds me of the Obama-era controversy over "You didn't build that." But at least they didn't go out and tear up the roads out of pique.

More from inside NIH: Per a source with knowledge, for all internal research (of which there is like $10 billion worth or so), ALL purchasing shut down as of yesterday. That means gloves, reagents, anything involved with lab work, which means a lot of that work will stop.

Yes. My husband is an NIH-funded scientist studying infectious diseases such as whooping cough, covid, & influenza. The current grant funding his salary runs out of money this summer; a delay in grant reviews means he won’t get a new grant funded before then. He’ll lose his job.
