To help fund its buyout, Paramount racked up $ billions in financial backing from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE who will indirectly own 50% of the company’s equity, and potentially up to 100% through future investments, but no voting rights. The FCC approved all of this. 👎 apnews.com/article/warn...

Trump’s cuts to NOAA, which regulates fisheries, has left the agency slower to respond to the industry’s needs, fishermen said. Staff cutbacks also resulted in the agency reducing weather balloons used to gather data fishermen rely on. apnews.com/article/dona... @standupforscience.net 🧪
Trump tried to make allies of fishermen. Some are turning on him
Some commercial fishermen have come to question whether Trump is meeting the needs of an industry he has long leaned on for support.

"physicists have come up with a whole new way of defining what it means to be a fluid, based on fundamental properties known as symmetries, and have shown that the Navier-Stokes equations are a consequence of symmetries." ⛲ www.quantamagazine.org/theory-of-fl...
Theory of Fluids Enters the 21st Century | Quanta Magazine
From the 1800s to the early 2000s, physicists used the same theory to understand the behavior of fluids. Now, using a modern insight, they have redefined fluids from the bottom up.

Premium subbies to my BA newsletter can read about a weird little galaxy called NGC 1052-DF9 that apparently has no dark matter. But it gets weirder: there are two other wee galaxies nearby that don't have any, either…and they're all on a line in space. badastronomy.beehiiv.com/p/another-ti... 🔭 🧪
Another tiny galaxy found WITHOUT dark matter
The invisible material is ubiquitous, so finding a galaxy without it is pretty weird

New: Supreme Court upholds birthright citizenship. Roberts writes for majority, joined by Barrett and the libs. Kavanaugh concurs in part and dissents in part. Jackson writes concurrence joined partially by Sotomayor. Alito, Gorsuch, Thomas all dissent (+ Gorsuch also signs on to Thomas' dissent)
Reminds me of this classic R. Crumb illustration, which of course came long after the predictions made in that 1925 comic.

Lewis George’s progressive base is still in celebration mode, but eventually the realities (and tradeoffs) of governing will have to set in. No one can have everything all at once in even good budget years; these are most certainly not good budget years.
There were some ugly claims on X that Janeese was the candidate of white “transplants” while McDuffie was the choice of longtime Black residents. But it looks like McDuffie will only win ward 3 (wealthy, white) while Janeese will carry every other ward (including majority-Black wards 7 and 8).
Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania is a fucking idiot.

I’m not sure why this isn’t being mentioned more, but: IRS policy for 50 years has been that the sitting president & VP get audited every year, in an effort to reassure the public they’re not corruptly abusing the office to enrich themselves.

"In 2025, D.C. saw traffic fatalities cut in half — the largest reduction in the country. This progress should be protected. Moreover, decisions impacting the traffic enforcement program should be made by D.C.’s locally elected leaders, not by federal lawmakers." Our latest opinion piece:
Opinion: Congress should keep its hands off D.C. traffic safety laws
The city has made crucial steps forward in traffic enforcement, argue a D.C. Councilmember and a local advocate. Congress threatens to take us backward.
