On this day in 1920, daredevil Charles Stephens went over Niagara Falls in an oak barrel using an anvil for ballast. He ignored warnings and strapped his feet to the anvil in the barrel. The only part of him ever recovered after he went over the falls was his right arm.

Norway defeated England in a World Cup qualifier in Oslo on September 9, 1981. Which led to this—the greatest call in sports broadcasting history. Kick rocks, Maggie Thatcher.
Happy 54th birthday to Carlos Delgado, who, in addition to being a helluva slugger, took a brave and morally-correct stance against the Iraq War in 2004, earning him boos and derision and threats. "Athletes, who have this platform where they can reach millions of people, should use it." - Delgado
Since I did do my PhD in cyanobacteria growth and treatment optimization modeling AND work in the water treatment industry, I’m gonna share my theory as to what’s happening here and how to fix it. People are focusing on the painted bottom of the pool increasing residual heat, and while that 1/19
RIP Mark Rothko. You would have loved how the hydrogen peroxide bleach is only turning the Reflecting Pool blue around the perimeter
Once again, CSIS is found to be withholding crucial information regarding unlawful activity - this time from the minister, other times from the courts. And not are there no repercussions, but CSIS is rewarded with expanded powers - first under the Foreign Interference Act in 2024 & now Bill C-22.
Our Solidarity Guard sees the reality of the occupation every single day in the West Bank while providing protective presence to Palestinian communities. Listen to Alon-Lee Green, our National Co-Director of Standing Together, on BBC:
Finally, a clear repudiation of the brain-dead “it’s just a tool” argument that gets floated cynically about every new technology:
Students, if you’re thinking about dropping a note to that teacher or professor about what their class/project/mentorship has meant to you, but you worry it will be cringe or cheesy, let me just tell you they will coast on the fuzzy feelings prompted by that note for months, if not years

What I like best about the Artemis II photos is that it was taken by actual humans. An actual person had to frame it and manually adjust settings. It's their own artistic rendition of what they thought looked best at the time, something no probe, rover or unmanned spacecraft can take. it's art
The horse op-ed is an instant classic. I can't tell you how much joy this piece gives me. It should be taught in every introductory writing class in no small part because the horse arguments are so compelling. "I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children."
Incredible footage from a United Airlines flight of the Artemis II launch.

"The way some of these other immigrants are getting treated in our country right now is a travesty and a disgrace... I think what’s going on in our country — what we’re doing to some of these amazing immigrants, is really unfortunate and it’s really sad." - Charles Barkley on CBS
Let's catalogue all of the links between Graham Platner, neo-Nazism, and other extremism that many Democrats are choosing to make excuses for. This should be laid out simply in one place. I literally had to screenshot this because it goes over the character limit.
In fairness it’s not like the consequences of having a mad king unilaterally take the country to war on a whim were so incredibly obvious that you could see it coming from the 18th and 19th centuries www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Attempting to justify the energy consumption of data centres to the calorific intake of humans will lead inextricably to comparative worth of machines vs people and devaluation of life.
SAM ALTMAN: “People talk about how much energy it takes to train an AI model … But it also takes a lot of energy to train a human. It takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart.”
