I did a summer creative writing course when I was 13, and we read "A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I don't think most of the students understood it, but I instantly loved it, and is probably the most influential short story I've ever read.

Shortly after I discovered Swan Boy, I was observing a trial that was going on for a over a month in a small town, and it was wearing me down. After a sudden and dramatic mistrial, when I realized it meant that I could go home, Swan Boy's line of "This worked out great for me" entered my head.
