That’s probably why he doesn’t have any. Why we let this guy whose idea of a deep relationship is a real estate deal in which he defrauds everyone in sight become our President, in which capacity he can destroy not only his own relationships, but ours, is a mystery.

Great reporting by Politico. 1 Trade talks have centred on cars, steel & aluminum 2 Heavy trucks have lots of steel. Both sides agreed to reduce auto tariffs. On Friday, US thought that didn't include heavy trucks under steel tariffs, Canada thought it did. www.politico.com/news/2026/08...

Inside the 72 hours that cratered the US-Canada trade deal

Trump announced a “DEAL” on Tuesday night. Then things went south. Now the $1 trillion trade relationship is unraveling.

"One of [Prime Minister Mark Carney's] favorite lines is that 'nostalgia is not a policy,' and he has told everyone who will listen that there is no going back to the old relationship with the United States — a close and familial, if lopsided, bond."

Every subsequent U.S. president who tries to do a modicum of good via foreign policy or trade is going to be sitting across from someone thinking yeah sure, okay, but what about the next guy. Absent political reforms, tribunals and truth and reconciliation, that credibility is gone forever.

I wish that instead of matching dollar tariffs, we took directed and targeted measures with qualitative effects on the structure of our economy. Regulate the tech industry, ban US ownership in key sectors, cancel procurement contracts with US companies, etc.

Like I’m not even factoring in the ability to switch reasonably fluidly between English and French. Just seeing someone making coherent sentences in any language at all is … quite the contrast.

“In March, he told Republican lawmakers that passing a strict voter identification law cracking down on mail ballots, which Democrats now use more than Republicans, would “guarantee the midterms” for his party.”

Canadians have a long history of having the courage to do the ethical thing: 🇨🇦 sent over 1M troops into Europe from a population of 12M because fighting the Nazis was the right thing to do, even though it was all happening an ocean away. Before the Americans joined the fight, so there’s that.
