The accounting is in: In Oregon there are 111 data centers. The TOTAL number of people employed at data centers is just 2,630, or 0.1% of the labor force. Those 100 data centers consumer 23% of all electricity used in Oregon. Meanwhile, electricity rates skyrocket as more centers are built.

Oregon data centers by the numbers: 111 facilities consume nearly one-quarter of state’s power, according to new report

A first-of-its-kind report details the footprint of the controversial facilities.

Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers. He confirmed what we all suspected: people submitting these papers have *no idea* what is going on in them.

TMLR has faced a deluge of submissions, necessitating stricter desk rejection policies due to limited reviewer capacity Co-EiC Nihar Shah reached out to authors of 10 papers slated for desk reject. Could they answer questions about their *own* submission? medium.com/@TmlrOrg/ask...

Yesterday, I visited the Pompejanum in Aschaffenburg. As some of you may recall, in 2022, a Roman portrait, unknowingly acquired by a woman at a Goodwill store in Austin, Texas, for $34.99, was identified as an artefact stolen during World War II from the Pompejanum. It was returned in 2023.

🎰 Welcome to the FID Lottery. We pulled the lever 25 times on the same machine. Identical diffusion model, identical ImageNet class-cond recipe, only the seed changed. The house paid out anywhere from 33.59 to 35.69 FID. A 2.1-point spread, pure luck. Step onto the floor 👇🧵

What is wild to me is the defense, BY THE NEURIPS BOARD, that fabricated citations do not mean "the content of the papers themselves [is] necessarily invalidated" It does. It very much does. What do you think citing other work is for? What do you think writing a paper is for? What do you *think*?
