Beginning in the early 1960s, Japan strove to protect children’s safe and independent mobility, especially on the journey to and from school. Its techniques, which have been sociotechnically inventive, include the walking school bus. ...

A new housing development under construction in the Netherlands The cycle infrastructure is already in place, complete with junctions ready to connect to future homes, along with dedicated bus lanes Active and sustainable travel is planned from the very beginning, not bolted on as an afterthought

It’s much the same in Alberta. Police and traffic safety orgs have been doubling and tripling down on PSAs about speed limits since the province banned speed cameras. Crashes and fatalities are up, meanwhile the government’s priorities are increasing highway speed limits and removing bike lanes.

A story of cause and effect: Last November, Ontario banned cities from using speed safety cameras to issue tickets. Reckless speeding immediately surged in Toronto, Ottawa, Guelph, and cities throughout the province. A 🧵 about my latest in Bloomberg (gift link)

My office was sent this video of masked ICE agents grabbing someone off the street on 2nd St between Erie St. & Jersey Ave. in Ward E. We have also been made aware of additional ICE sightings and abductions in Jersey City today, and have alerted Public Safety. ICE may be targeting delivery cyclists.

I strongly condemn these tactics, meant to instill fear. If you have any more information, please reach out to our office at 201-547-5283 or GPerez@JCNJ.org. Neighbors have held onto his bike in a safe location so if he has a successful case and is released, he can get it back.

Please stay safe. To report an ICE sighting, call the DIRE hotline at (888) 347-3767. Some of the vehicles ICE is known to be using include: Red Jeep, plates U34SZY Grey Dodge, plates W31KCJ Black Nissan Pathfinder, plates W51UWS

Utrecht continues to update its city so that people can comfortably & safely bike side-by-side. You'll see people biking two abreast as parents put a reassuring hand on their kid's back, or when one friend on an e-bike gives a boost to their slower friend, or sometimes, just an affectionate touch.

PDA is rare in the Netherlands, but biking side by side is often an opportunity for friends to touch, out of affection, or perhaps if they need a little energy boost on their bikes. Utrecht continue...

remarkable how it's consensus within all realms of transportation academic/professional/political pundit spaces that transit projects cost too much and how rarely it's coupled with "we spend orders of magnitude more on highways which also suffer from exorbitant cost overruns and consultant grift"

Benjamin Schneider@benschneider.bsky.social · last wk.

There's some truth here: Transit projects cost too much and the urban transportation market is getting more competitive. Withholding transit grant money, as the Trump admin is doing, addresses neither of those things, of course. But what would help? t.co/cZmiMFc6yf

The e-bike registration law is dumb for many reasons, but one of them is that if this is the hassle people have to go through to register something that puts around at 20mph, then what incentive is there to *not* get a 40mph rocket? Not my thing personally, but some people will go that route now.

Ex post facto sales tax, yet another way @SenPresScutari is about to k*ll people, by making e-bikes harder to own and operate than the exponentially more dangerous cars they’ve been replacing. Call him now and tell him to support a law in line with other states: (732) 827-7480

Cable cars/gondolas are often seen as an ineffective gimmick just for tourists. But they do fill a genuine transport niche in urban places with rough cliffs and ridges—like the Palisades in Hudson County. We should build some here.

Cable cars: Not just for ski vacations. In La Paz, Medellín, and a half dozen cities in #France, they're being used as robust forms of urban transit. I gave #Paris 's C1, Europe's newest (and longest) aerial tram, a test drive, and here's what I discovered: www.highspeed.blog/up-where-the...
