Furthermore, some norms and laws are slowly changing to evolve with the times, but generally it’s verboten for candidates to spend campaign money on things like childcare or other costs that escalate while taking the unpaid hectic job of campaigning.

This is also an underappreciated reason we live in a gerontocracy. No company is giving you leave to campaign and with term limits in many states, you best case have a job for around a decade. Meanwhile, old people are bored and have infinite time, plus a lot of money usually!

good reminder that before the counting is over, election results don’t tighten. at no point is anyone trailing. nobody moves closer. they’re just tabulating the polls. it’s a fixed number that just isn’t done yet. to say otherwise is bad journalism but even worse math.

Among the positives: Top executives for the team showed up to the council's work session after having skipped recent public meetings about funding a renovation of the city-owned Moda Center for the Blazers. The city councilors who for months have been chumming the waters with anti-billionaire bombast kept their performances mostly professional and on point. And as District 4 Councilor Eric Zimmerman noted, there appeared to be a solid majority on the council committed to reaching a responsible deal that keeps the Blazers in Portland in exchange for the city's $120 million share of a $573 million state-and-local package.

#OldTrailsFire in Spokane now appears to be most destructive wildfire in WA State history by wide margin (650+ structures lost), w/additional TBD losses nearby. Other PacNW fires actively burning, though less destructive, are far larger & could burn for weeks amid severe drought.

I also have a very specific contempt for the kinds of people who yell "vote blue no matter who" and then turn around and try to knife the other side of a primary in the back. We're in this together and we have to learn to live with primary outcomes to win.

What upsets me about the conversation around the DSA more than anything is that very little of the concerns and advice seem to be genuine. They often come from someone who doesn’t want to have to adapt to maintain power in the Democratic Party and is arguing that the voters are wrong because they’ll be out of a job if they aren’t, or, worse, a Republican making an attack framed as “good advice.” We don’t need someone whose continued power and influence is tied to maintaining their connections to a Democratic establishment that isn’t reflecting the preferences of voters anymore lying about other Democrats to try to keep their status, we need a Democratic Party that is willing to embrace the big tent, a tent filled with people who are willing to come together to support each other even as we continue to debate and discuss what the best course of action is. The biggest threat to the Democratic Party isn’t a challenge from the left, it’s people who will yell that you must vote blue no matter who when the candidate is to the right side of the tent but will argue that anyone from the left side isn’t a real Democrat, and from people on the left side of the tent who will yell the same about the right side of the tent. In a national politics where the GOP is defined exclusively by whoever can be the most devoted to Donald Trump, we’re all Democrats. I know that politics would be easier if we were like the Republicans and could march in lockstep, but that diversity is our strength, and if we don’t learn how to live with each other and embrace that diversity peacefully, we’re going to fail. That’s a much bigger threat than the biggest city in the country electing some candidates that represent its residents.

Time and again I catch myself getting a little emotional at Thorns matches seeing children of all genders get stuck in rooting for the women on the pitch. Can’t help but assume the long term impacts of the next generation revering women athletes is gonna be a huge net positive to society
