Furthermore, some norms and laws are slowly changing to evolve with the times, but generally it’s verboten for candidates to spend campaign money on things like childcare or other costs that escalate while taking the unpaid hectic job of campaigning.
This is also an underappreciated reason we live in a gerontocracy. No company is giving you leave to campaign and with term limits in many states, you best case have a job for around a decade. Meanwhile, old people are bored and have infinite time, plus a lot of money usually!

kinda love thinking that this one errant forwarded email might on aggregate lead to literal millions of dollars of negotiating leverage
ultimately so funny that rip city mgmt’s approach in these emails was “we would rather die than create a written public record of anything we say or do” and then their lawyer just forwarded the whole thing to the City
names you can hear david letterman saying with mild incredulity
Bonita Gooch is the next representative for Kansas House District 84, unseating incumbent Ford Carr by a 70-30 margin
it is impossible to overstate how much better solar and wind power have gotten in the last four years, let alone forty
Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.
wild that Spokane is having an election right now, and cool seeing voters are hopefully on track to invest in transit
Proposition 1––which extends and expands Spokane Transit service for another 20 years––is a nail-biter. Yes: 31,153 (50.38%) No: 30,686 (49.62%) It needs 50% + 1 to pass.
good reminder that before the counting is over, election results don’t tighten. at no point is anyone trailing. nobody moves closer. they’re just tabulating the polls. it’s a fixed number that just isn’t done yet. to say otherwise is bad journalism but even worse math.
Objectively awesome that a co-founder of Sunrise is on track to be a member of congress
civicAPI can now project that William Lawrence will be the Democratic nominee for Michigan US House 7. He will face Republican incumbent Tom Barrett in November.
On how many sites across Portland could become more developable if those remaining barriers were addressed: Tens of thousands.
chair avalos’ live-posting thread about @portlandneighborswelcome.org’s single stair design contest presentation at council this afternoon is characteristically thorough and informative.
Next up: Vice Chair Green and I have invited @portlandneighborswelcome.org and their partners to tell us about a single-stair design competition they recently organized. The competition is part of a broader initiative focused on mid-rise housing development and single-stair building code changes.
There is another way to live that is not at war with the planet. 😷
“Yet the state has secured just $480 million for the project, all of which has already been used or allocated for spending, resulting in a funding gap that may exceed $3 billion and raising questions about whether the project will proceed as planned.”
"construction work on the highway caps and much of the new street infrastructure, which was initially slated to begin as early as next year, is being pushed back by two or four years due to the lack of funding."
Evil billionaire: I hate you and everything you stand for. Give me $900 million. City council: what will you spend it on? Can you tell us? The Oregonian: how toxic. You are “chumming the waters with billionaire sentiment”.

One benefit of a simultaneous wildfire smoke and heatwave situation is that the smoke may slightly mitigate high temperatures. And one benefit of living in hell is that you get to write unique sentences like the one before this.
A great day to remember +30% of Oregon's carbon pollution comes from transportation, yet ODOT, Governor Kotek + the legislature are defunding transit while advancing multiple multi-billion dollar freeway expansions that will only make Oregon's air pollution and carbon emissions even worse #orpol
The climate crisis is accelerating. We’ve got a Mayor + some city councilors running cover for Zenith Energy. We’ve got a state legislature captured by corporate $ facilitating a data center build out for these energy sucking monsters. Let’s get serious, shall we?
apologies in advance if i'm an asshole this week but if i'm this mad and cranky now i have no idea how feral and vitriolic i'm going to be after three days of being stuck inside with the air quality getting even worse
Nothing like thick smoke and the yellow-ish haze to take some sanity points away
Good time to close your windows, get your air purifier running and dig out those masks.
#OldTrailsFire in Spokane now appears to be most destructive wildfire in WA State history by wide margin (650+ structures lost), w/additional TBD losses nearby. Other PacNW fires actively burning, though less destructive, are far larger & could burn for weeks amid severe drought.
I also have a very specific contempt for the kinds of people who yell "vote blue no matter who" and then turn around and try to knife the other side of a primary in the back. We're in this together and we have to learn to live with primary outcomes to win.
I'm tired of people who feel threatened by the DSA controlling the discourse about it, because even though I'm not a member, I can recognize that the DSA's good for all of us and for the Democratic Party
Time and again I catch myself getting a little emotional at Thorns matches seeing children of all genders get stuck in rooting for the women on the pitch. Can’t help but assume the long term impacts of the next generation revering women athletes is gonna be a huge net positive to society
I grew up with some pretty deeply internalized misogyny that has taken a long time to unravel, and going to WNBA games and experiencing something that is both built by and for women feels so incredibly healing.
i do appreciate that for derby week it feels like the Timbers faithful bring out some of the old school swag. Love seeing the USL kits, the old NP scarves, the og cascadia scarves. Secular rosaries
Get out if ordered and stay safe, Spokane. The Pyrocene epoch: it f––ing sucks, folks.
Horrifying radar loop as the #OldTrailsFire begins burning into neighborhoods NW of Spokane. The fire is now 2,000 acres as reports begin of homes fully involved. #wawx #wildfire
My iPhone will sometimes remind me how long I’ve been doing this, feeding me my photos from long ago. I do love this photo, and feel lucky to have been around American soccer for a loooooong minute.
