Being a good writer or even a good lecturer doesn’t necessarily make one a good audiobook narrator. If you have the means—and I’m pretty sure the publisher of the academic who inspired this post does—please pay a professional narrator! #booksky #history #audiobooksky

Ironically, the way mainstream papers lower the bar to give space to middling hacks in the name of ideological diversity is the closest real-world phenomeon to how MAGA imagines DEI works. Does anyone think we’d know the name Mark Thiessen if he were on the center-left competing for that slot?
Trump shared this Marc Thiessen article yesterday lol
this is both infuriating and sad to watch having him on at this point is really just taking advantage of a man who can't string together a single coherent thought
BLITZER: Why is Israel, another country, your red line right now, rather than a domestic issue that impacts Americans' everyday lives? FETTERMAN: Yeah, absolutely. And I agree with a lot of Democrats too. I called trash Platner.
It's very very strange to be in a situation where Jeanine Pirro is the sane and responsible one!
It's funny that Jeanine Pirro brought a box of evidence to WH to persuade Trump. He wants her to consciously *throw out* exculpatory facts and *knowingly* prosecute innocent people. So facts can't persuade him by definition. Me and @barbmcquade.bsky.social on this: newrepublic.com/article/2139...
This feels grimly accurate. I think for most people, engagement with the party feels like getting on Temu’s mailing list: Just a neverending stream of spam asking for cash and no other meaningful call to be part of anything that might generate any sense of identity or community.
There's nothing to "join" in the Democratic Party. It's a brand with products I spend my vote on once a year at the democracy store. Most people's experience of it is an endless stream of texts that read like scams, their reward for donating or signing a petition. No wonder DSA is growing

Oh fuck here we go. The escalation spiral begins. So fucking evil, so fucking dumb, and so fucking hard to avoid when three kleptokakistocratic criminal shithole regimes are involved.
The US is adopting a strategy of attacking water storage and desalination plants designed to render the region uninhabitable. If continued, this strategy will make the Gulf littoral uninhabitable in the coming decades. Yet there is no discussion of these tactics and their repercussion in the US.
@sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com was a genuine pleasure meeting you this week!
Again, this was literally the lowest, most essential bar in US politics from 1949-2017, & then everyone decided they were shameful oath-violating cowards & He was One Special Boy: bsky.app/profile/mcop...
No one in US politics will say this, I don't know why we should expect NATO leaders to do it
Some more thoughts on last week's @liberalism.org piece, as well as a link to it for those who missed it over the great North American long weekend.
Liberalism and principles
Dealing with the reality of emergent politics

So much slowness to respond to global illiberalism stems from liberals struggling to find their feet after (as) the political ground shifted (shifts) underneath them. Today @liberalism.org, I suggest a framework for understanding what's happened and thinking about what to do next.
A Liberalism of Principle, Not Program
Slavery’s opponents knew how to keep things simple. Today’s liberals should do likewise.

Here’s some interesting polling for you: young, predominantly male gamers are twice as likely to believe conspiracy theories, while being four times as likely to confidently claim they can spot misinformation. Read more in this week’s VGIM: www.videogamesindustrymemo.com/p/young-male...
A very happy 6th wedding anniversary to @daralind.bsky.social. Thank you for marrying me; I’m so proud of you and love you dearly.
this is your mission. our pedophile president needs you to show up in full combat gear on a hot summer day to the pool he filled with algae because he gave a paint job to one of his cigar puffing cronies. you are ordered to stop tourists from touching the green water. good luck soldier
national guard deployed to keep people from touching the reflecting pool
This is an excellent distillation of the tension between an anti-populist commitment to the truth and the ugly reality of electoral politics. I'm not sure I fall where he does, but it is a spot-on analysis of the internal conflicts many of us feel.

Assuming people are responsible for the things they choose to do and say increasingly seems like a minority position
Congrats to the anti-woke dunces who claimed to be free speech warriors but made common cause with this guy because wokeness is always worse than fascism.
With its recent rulings, the Roberts Court has now entirely perverted the purpose of the 15th Amendment, turning an outright ban on racial discrimination in voting into a right to discriminate against black voters. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
The Supreme Court Has Invented a Right to Discriminate
Alabama gambled on the Court’s partisanship, and won.

"Post-Duda Poland has confronted a series of “institutional traps,” following a familiar pattern where illiberal movements design systems specifically to force successors into legitimacy crises, creating a situation in which every attempted repair can itself be portrayed as anti-democratic."
Learning from the international struggle
Over the last twenty years, illiberal forces have coordinated ideas, personnel, and finances across international borders. Liberals can learn from this.

When I get cranky about not scaring people — even when things are objectively scary! — this is usually what I’m thinking about: the 2019 public-charge policy. NO ONE WAS ACTUALLY DENIED A GREEN CARD UNDER IT. ~40,000 people were scared out of applying at all. documentedny.com/2026/05/29/u...
The Throughline: Don’t Let Trump Spin Scare People Out Of Applying For Green Cards
Don't panic. This green card announcement, like other immigration changes under the Trump administration, merits more than a little circumspection.
