I feel this. I do not like them and do not use them. However, I come to think that that's a privilege I have. The most prolific voice noters in my life are all heavily dyslexic. Others are occasionally in crisis. I can live with that, I think.
Finally realised why I don't like voice notes. People do them because they find typing tedious -- it takes too long. But because speaking is easier, they say FAR more than they need to, meaning recipient has to listen for ages, mostly to waffle. It's shifting the extra effort onto the receiver.

If you're someone who cares about open source software, data privacy, and/or just general health data nerd stuff (or all of the above) I can't recommend watching @bennettoxford.bsky.social CTO Seb Bacon's inaugural lecture enough. It was fantastic. Link in here: www.bennett.ox.ac.uk/blog/2026/06...

The @bmj.com asked for my opinion on the single patient record as the NHS modernisation bill heads into its second reading. So here is my opinion www.bmj.com/content/393/... That the NHS needs better information continuity is undeniable, but the programme is also at risk of repeating past mistakes

There's only one correct way forward for handling the introduction of MLKEM into TLS, and, indeed, all future tls-wg cryptography debates, and it's this proposal: snkth.com/add-crypto/
Additive Cryptography for TLS
This document defines Additive Cryptography for TLS, a transition framework in which algorithms are never replaced and only accreted. Implementations MUST NOT negotiate a single key exchange algorithm...

Thoroughly enjoyed Mr Wilson's 2nd Liners last night. New Orleans style funeral marching band doing 90s dance covers. Exactly as awesome as it sounds. Outer Space and Glory Box were particularly enjoyable.

I’m petrified about today’s science news. Genetically modifying crabs to have cheetah genes? This could go sideways fast.

Simple way to reasonably run a background process in a docker container. Saves setting up s6 or similar. Uses the run-one-constantly tool from the run-one package to keep it running, and the default docker init process to propagate signals to all child processes. gist.github.com/bloodearnest...

We are hiring a tech lead! We build high impact national health data infrastructure that is open, productive, and beautiful - like our OpenSAFELY - in a truly mixed team, where software developers and researchers all share skills, status, knowledge, and best practice! my.corehr.com/pls/uoxrecru...
We really enjoyed welcoming so many people to our OpenSAFELY Community Symposium in London last week. We're busy making videos of every session, so there'll be an archive for those of you that couldn't make it While we work on that - here's a teaser :) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pv_Z... #OpenSAFELY

"Why doesn't the NHS use its GP data?". Because of privacy... Because it's hard... But we solved it. We developed new privacy protections... We built docs.OpenSAFELY.org! 181 projects! 31 organisations! Now, they come together, for the first time, in 3D! www.bennett.ox.ac.uk/blog/2024/10...
If you've been wondering where I went: my team in Oxford (60 of us!) build beautiful tools for NHS data. We help researchers work on the whole nation's GP records while protecting - provably - everyone's privacy. It's big potatoes! www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRjR...
