I was trying to figure out the reason I care so little (either way) about Nolan's Odyssey and it hit me: there is no poetry. Only 'dialogue'. Who cares for Homer with no poetry???

Ah! Whilst I am on a classical music jag, I'd forgotten that this year marks the 90th birthday of Steve Reich. To the best of my knowledge he's alive and well and still composing new music. If you want an introduction to his art, I recommend "Music for 18 Musicians."

Reading the Gormenghast novels for the first time and man, are they a treat. Peake’s writing is succulent — “His voice came down from the shadows in huge wads of sound, or like the warm, sick notes of some prodigious mouldering bell of felt.” It’s the kind of sentence you re-read just for the joy.
