I’m really enjoying learning about IFS, internal family systems. I imagine, like much of psychology, there are criticisms of it being non-scientific. To me that just raises the more general question about how one can be scientific about a theory of mind.

I personally spend a lot of my time on this app posting about science and philosophy. I noticed that as politics has gotten more and more intense here, there seems less space for these other things.

I’m personally totally fine with this being an app where we talk about things other than politics. And the perception that we’re the liberal politics app is a barrier to us all having a little fucking peace by letting the whole site spend a bunch of hours having fun talking about, like, flowers.

Bluesky's nuclear block supports a culture of consent. Each user can completely prevent another user from having any access to them on this site. Right wing harassers on X hate consent. They hate being told "no." They hate not being able to force their posts onto others and target others.

The interview is actually quite interesting and not at all like this. Feels like ragebait.

This may dramatically slow down the attacks on science. It also provides a template for how to prevent the federal government from becoming a patronage state. It’s a big deal!

One mistake I often make when networking is giving out my card/email address and not getting the contact info of the other person. As interested as they seem and no matter how much they promise to get in touch, ~50% of the time you never hear from them again.

Maybe some of the lack of political action comes from our scientific/materialist perspective on people, where all you need is statistics, but there’s no role for goals, beliefs, wills and strategy. If our main tool is probabilities, then we miss a lot of meaning and sense of striving for outcomes.

This is all downstream of the belief that the right has no agency. If you buy that, then the anti-trans backlash is a response to the overreach of woke. But woke is perceived as something the left just decided to do, like a trend, and not in and itself a response to a violation of rights.

Genuinely, the vast majority of American voters believe that only laziness or criminal intent could be stopping the average immigrant from obtaining US citizenship. The truth is that becoming a US citizen takes years upon years of work and requires navigating a baroque bureaucratic nightmare.

Anybody at @moderation.bsky.app want to try to explain why they suspended @matthewcort.land, ANOTHER of the most prominent people out here fighting for disabled and marginalized people? Like… are y'all planning to suspend/ban literally every disabled legal scholar/policy worker out here, orrrr…?

anyway, if you're looking for Matthew Cortland, you should sub to their patreon since they're a disabled lawyer evidently getting deplatformed from places.

This is what happens when you buy a bunch of stuff from a changing list of lab components, many of which fall under a project with no documentation (laser-fiber optics coupling). Also without a storage/labeling system… I’m hoping to do better for future purchases.

I tend to give Trump more agency than this. I think narcissists often know the truth at some level, or they wouldn't be able to be cunning in protecting their self interest. Maybe in the IFS language of parts, some parts of Trump know the truth and some don't.

After trying this out several times, I'm both impressed and see the substantial limitations of the automatic video and podcast feature. In order to use this more regularly, I'd need to be able to edit the results. There are parts where they get things so wrong, I'm embarrassed to share the result.

Well, I gave notebookLM some writing about my life, some details about my grandparents history, a research article about the impact of divorce on kids, and some emails. I tried out the video feature. They get a few details wrong, but it also gets a lot right. www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-FG...

What I find disturbing about notebookLM is that the interface strongly disfavors reading the original sources. Without using a third party extension, you can't even redownload the source documents to view as you like. Also, though you can view the documents, only a tiny window is given for viewing.
